"Dave Paulsen (George Mason)
  • George Mason is no longer the perennial postseason squad and NCAA Cinderella it was just 10-15 years ago. Ever since Jim Larrañaga left in 2011, the Patriots have become an also-ran program struggling to regain relevance in a competitive A-10 field. Paulsen came on board back in 2015 and has done nothing to move the needle. The highlight was the 2016-17 squad that won 20 games and went to CBI, but this is a program that went to five NCAAs and three NITs from 1997-2011. Paulsen’s fifth Patriots team might be his worst yet, sitting at the bottom of the A-10 at just 2-8 (13-10 overall)."

The guy listed immediately before Dave on this website is Chris Mooney. I don’t think many Richmond fans want him fired anymore.

In English please?
Jim there is a new restaurant in Short Pump that just opened. Shouldn't you go and write something about it?

Translation of my post as I was reading Paulsen's book on how to run the spread offense while simultaneously having a seizure because Paulsen is horrible at running the spread offense....

He has had like 2-3 GREAT recruits in 5 years. That is a problem. And GREAT is also subjective to George Mason. It is not GREAT to better basketball programs. He CANNOT recruit and continues to fail at that. Does that make better sense?

Pointless statement that has nothing to do with the discussion. JDS need to play in garbage time now?

I think it's troublesome that a sophomore is seeing a third of his minutes from his freshman year and he's still seeing no playing time even in blowouts. The conversation was about roster management and utilizing scholarships and I feel like JDS's roster spot is currently being wasted. Is he being developed at all?

I just wanted to make sure I understood what you were saying. Guess I could’ve done it in a different way. No offense intended, seriously.

how is this so hard to understand. people can't have it both ways... Dave has a bunch of non A-10 caliber kids under scholarship. He then either minimally plays them or not at all and fans don't have the right to think that maybe they don't deserve a scholarship spot because they aren't good enough? If JDS isn't good enough to play in 19-20 Mason team then Dave obviously swung and missed again. Wasted roster spots when we could have a big utilizing them.

Did you think JDS was a miss when he signed? If you did, you were in the minority around here.

How about Goanar? Everybody seemed pretty excited about him.

Point is, it’s pretty easy to sit back after 2-3 years and pronounce that scholarships are being wasted.

Every team has bench guys who don’t pan out. I guarantee you none of those guys thought they’d end up as anything but starters. That’s the way it goes.

Even with Mar and Calixte, at least we were optimistic because we were seeing them get minutes and the thought was that all of our freshmen were gaining valuable minutes and experience. Only to see them regress and get their minutes slashed by the time they became juniors and lose PT to freshmen.

Interesting post on Bucknell's board - http://boards.basketball-u.com/showtopic.php?tid/20183/:

"Yes, but they are three scholarship players at the end of the bench who DP no doubt wanted to transfer: SF DeAndre Abram, PF/C Danny Dixon and SG Kameron Murrell. These three were among five late signees DP made when he first got to GMU and had a number of players decommit or transfer out. The three who are leaving were very unlikely to ever contribute. That is a luxury DP has at GMU that a Bucknell coach does not have, i.e. that poor players leave one way or another, freeing up room for new scholarship players. That has not happened even one time at Bucknell to date."

This season is lost.

So DP needs to man up and play all the kids whether he likes it or not. Theres no moral victory to be had at this point.

If it really is about "the student athlete"....then be an adult...tell the team...we play everyone regardless of the outcome..which could get ugly. They are on tue team for a reason.

There's no reason to run a select 7 into the ground thru the rest of the season.

When JDS signed? absolutely not. dude could flat out shoot.. problem is Paulsen's ineptitude in play calling for a shooter and the fact that JDS miraculously no longer can shoot. So yes after his freshman year I thought it was a waste and after this year I know it was a waste.

Mar's fall from promise is widely documented. Unfathomable but damn he is horrible now. Can't even play the defense that once made me not want to self mutilate when Paulsen put him and Calixte in together for 5 mins a game

and @gmujim92 I know he is an injured freshman, but do your sources think Daddy will end up being a contributor in the future for an A-10 team that makes a postseason tournament? Because my sources do not. So that is 3-4 current scholarship athletes that we have rostered that I wish we didn't. Nothing against the kids but I want to win and I don't care if they are nice and help old ladies cross the streets. Some of my favorite Mason players ever during my fan hood have coincidentally been those that go across to the Sunoco across University mall to get blunt wraps during the season. As long as they do well in school and aren't an issue in society I want them to be dogs. We have a bunch of church mice and a coach that has no idea what he is doing and expect to win against against BASKETBALL players. Some of them I have seen there you will never guess either. He needs to recruit better bottom line.

JDS and Goanar are not misses. They were both solid A10 recruits and I think most people would agree. However, Dave and Co. have done a horrible job at developing them. Part of it is on the individual but a lot of the blame rests on the coaches shoulders. For me personally, I don't think JDS gets enough playing time. He is a streaky player who needs minutes to produce but he isn't getting those here. If DP doesn't plan to give him at least 10 minutes a game then he should help him find somewhere else to play, because he will not be successfully here.

We don't get any production or minutes from our bench and I am sure it is killing their confidence. I'd like to see DP go into the next home game with JDS, XJ, Goanar, Calixte, Oduro as the starting 5. See how the first few minutes go and hopefully it will get them some confidence, and light a fire in the other guys.

Jason’s struggles have 0.0% to do with our offensive system. He has had a bunch of wide-open looks with his feet set and still can’t consistently make a jump shot. That has been a problem for him from Day 1 — if he could shoot the 3 believe me he’d be out there even with mediocre defense.

So I guess you give Dave the majority of the credit for developing Marquise, Otis and Kier into second-team all-A-10 players and AJ into an impact player on both ends of the floor?

Why are we recruiting kids that can't hit 3's?

or

Why can't JDS hit 3's anymore?

or

Why isn't Paulsen developing JDS's shot?
