I've painfully watched Hewitts' style of 4 out 1 in, and its always inconsistent, unproductive and almost always leaves the door open for a comeback by the other team. Its a rare phenomenon hat actually becomes counterproductive and mentally causes the players to turn into zombies. Unless Moore turned into Kenny Anderson, there's no logical reason we should be running it. IMO, it would pressure the defense more by putting JJ into the high post where he can operate in a high low set with copes/thompson/porter. Getting our bigs to pass to each other will be vital as teams will throw out zones and dare us to shoot. One way to carve up the zone is to make good passes to and from the the bigs from the middle of the zone. That's all chemistry and coordination. I guess I am somewhat excited to see the new players and what adjustments are made from last year. I really hope we do not stick with a 4 out.

I'd like to see Jenkins play the role Pearson played his senior year. Let him hangout in the high post and give him options from there. Everyone raves about his passing ability, and we all know how athletic he is. I really think him and Royal playing the high post would really give this offensive more options.

From what I saw from the scrimmage, Jenkins passes underneath while muscling himself toward the basket were not very good (too hard and/or too low). Hopefully passing from the high post would be a different story.

In order to be effective in the high post, Jalen needs to prove he can consistently hit a shot from there. Otherwise, opponents will just let him fire away and the high-low pass won't be open.

I'm in favor of speeding up the game. The Patriots averaged about 4 fast break points a game last season.

This really shouldn't have any overall effect on fast break points. Fast break points come when you A) Stop your opponent B) grab the rebound and C) run and convert at the other end.

It doesn't matter if it is a 24, 30, 35 or (OLD SCHOOL!) 45 second clock. If Mason can't do A, B and C those 4 fast break points a game don't change.

Actually, I didn't say that reducing the shot clock will increase the number of fast break points for the Patriots. The point I was making is that the game is slow and boring. How often do we watch teams walk the ball up the court and pass aimlessly for much of the shot clock?

Let's speed up the game and increase the number of possessions. Then, perhaps we will see teams playing more aggressively both offensively and defensively.

And, let's see if this increases the fast break opportunities.

See this is where it gets frustrating. You have Royal who can hit that shot, but doesn't drive much. Then the opposite with JJ who can't really shoot but can drive. I'm really not sure what position JJ should play especially if Royal does develop a dribble drive. But yes, Royal should be the 4 and copes/thompson/porter the 5 in high low sets. Shit, where do we play JJ?

Why do there have to be assigned positions in a motion offense? Put Moore, Holloway, Jenkins, Royal and Copes out there together and let them all play to their strengths.

If Jenkins feels better catching the ball at the elbow and then penetrating like Pearson used to do, let him do that; if Royal feels comfortable shooting from the elbow instead of driving like Pearson also used to do, let him do that. Either one of them can dish it off to Copes in the post, who can throw it back out to Holloway for a 3.

Granted, it wouldn't be a great perimeter-shooting lineup to say the least, but it would surely pose some matchup problems for our opponents in the lane. And it's not like Jenkins and Royal can't post their defenders up when they get mismatches, which will open up more room for Moore and Holloway.

Again, it's not ideal without at least one more consistent shooter on the floor, but there's no reason Royal, Jenkins and Copes can't coexist in the same lineup.

Tom,

I want to see whether Jalen can effectively defend the "3", and reduce his turnovers particularly as he assumes more of the playmaking role.

Completely agree, Pablo. I know he's been working hard in the gym and in practice, but the aforementioned lineup would not work unless he can potentially guard somebody smaller when we play man-to-man.

Of course, a zone defense would also alleviate much of that problem and would actually make us more effective due to having longer reach with three big men on the court.

JFC...that's more of a game plan than I have seen from a high priced coach in 3 years....

Don't let Edwards see that....

I was thinking vs a zone Tom. Since we dont seem to have perimeter threat other than Holloway, teams will zone us and or press us.

What kind of 3 are we talking about? A 3 like Garino or a 3 like Burgess? And in what capacity is he guarding said 3, in a man-t0-man or zone defense?

We will have to see well Royal shoots from the perimeter. We also know Marko can hit a shot from the top of the key over his defender if necessary. Gray has also shown the ability to knock down a few shots from the perimeter as well as Edwards, so I think there are substitution opportunities to counter if need be -- if what we want to do is try to shoot over top the zone that is.

We also know that no one is going to be able to keep Moore out of the middle of the zone, but if he can do anything with the ball once he's there is anyone's guess.

If substitution were a brand name for tailor made suits, it would not look good on ole Paul.

gemini,

The question was whether Jalen will be able to effectively defend an agile "3" in the man-to-man.
