I have awaited giving too much speculation until this played out a bit more. Whether a former head coach at a big 5 program, assistant coach, young and hungry from a smaller school or old or curmudgeonly (like me), I just want someone who has a track record of success, can coach x's and o's, does a good job of recruitment and player development, sees Mason as a step up AND wants to coach here. From what I can tell, Paulsen seems to pretty much check each of those boxes. Coach L was all of 3 years younger when he came to Mason from Bowling Green. His resume included 0 NCAA tournaments there yet he was able to develop a team that went beyond our expectations.
I was ready to throw in the towel on my season tickets had Hewitt been retained but I am ready to give the benefit of the doubt to the new coach, will retain my tickets and up my contribution next year. I will also give the coach the time needed to develop his team.
I will not comment on the other coaches or who was or was not on the short list. Irrespective of the hire, the proof will be in the team's play which of course remains to be seen. As speculation goes, I have reason for some optimism and hope (no it's not a dangerous thing) which, given where we have been over the past 4 years, is good. If the hire turns out to be someone else, then hopefully they will have a similar track record as Paulsen.
As for the AD, he should be assessed on wins and not the size of his balls or the big splash they may provide. I don't believe any of us are truly privy to what he was able to offer or how the process was handled.
Here's to progress, something that has been in short supply recently.
