So that's who the Bernie Sanders look alike was on the bench against GW

I should point out that Bernie has a higher forehead than I do! (Although when I saw the vine on Abrams dunk, I must admit there was a slight resemblance!).

As you might suspect, the sideline coaching program offers a wonderful experience and I believe that the idea of building bridges between the academic and athletic sides of the university is an excellent one.

No, I'm not an econ professor. But I was sideline coach for the GW game. The 4th Estate article on the sideline coaching program was written before the GW game, I'm assuming, even though it was published the day after that game. The pictures in the article did not include me.

I was gonna say my most fufilling classes were econ classes. Prof Block??? He was the best.
Howard Bloch was absolutely the best. His Labor Econ class was my favorite class at Mason. Loved Mason basketball too. He would remind his class when there was a game.

I'm glad to hear your enthusiasm for a Mason faculty member. In my experience with faculty, while surely some come across in class more effectively than others, I am struck by how dedicated they are to teaching, even those who have outstanding research reputations.

I didn't know Dr. Bloch well, but he was a long-time season ticket holder whose seats were near mine. Sadly he died before our Final Four run, which I'm sure he would have enjoyed as much as the rest of us. I believe there is a scholarship for an econ student in his name. If you haven't already done so, those touched by his classroom skill might consider contributing to it.

Here's his obit from the Washington Post:

"Howard R. Bloch, 63, a George Mason University economics professor from 1969 to 1999 who retired as director of undergraduate economics studies, died of brain cancer Jan. 25 at his home in Fairfax Station.

Dr. Bloch was born in Germany and grew up in Alexandria.

He graduated from George Washington High School and received a bachelor's degree in business from Duke University in 1958 and an economics doctorate degree from Princeton University in 1964.

Before joining George Mason, he taught economics at Butler University in Indiana, Dartmouth College, Lawrence University in Wisconsin and Simmons College in Massachusetts.

He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Shakespeare Oxford Society and advised the George Mason Economics Club.

His hobbies included attending theatrical productions and hunting.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Doris E. Bloch, of Fairfax Station; two daughters, Janet E. Hoffman of Vienna and Dr. Karen C. Bloch of Nashville; and two grandchildren."

Walter, you are a traitor to your namesake. Walter Williams was by far the most entertaining professor I had at Mason

Honestly there have been so many great econ professors at Mason that it would be tough to say one was the best. But I stand by my claim that Bloch was the best teacher. But, sure, Williams is outstanding. I understand Beottke is one of the best at the moment.

Beottke came after my time at Mason, but I have had a couple long and interesting conversations with him and read some of his work so I could see him being an interesting professor.

Bloch was the best, I thoroughly enjoyed his class.
I used to like listening to his arguments on how f#cked up agriculture policy was and would toss out questions to get him talking on the subject.

Only thing Paulsen hasn't done this year, imo, is beat GW. I can't say enough how important it is to win big games at home in front of good crowds. It's the only way we'll get people in the seats. All the marketing and facilities in the world won't create an hostile environment. Really big win for the program last night. We're in the right direction. Will be hard next year w/o Marko and Shevon, but we are putting the pieces together.

Dave showed some real versatility as a coach last night. Prior to this game, we had been averaging 19 three point attempts per game and only hitting at a 28.5% clip. Last night we totally abandoned the three ball, took most of our shots inside the paint, and reaped the rewards by shooting 50% from the field and keeping their bigs in foul trouble.

If vcu looked unprepared, who could blame them? We haven't played the style we played last night under Paulsen yet. Other teams have been happy to let us clank threes all game since we're not good at shooting them and it keeps us from attacking the paint.

It's tough to overstate how impressive this is from Paulsen and staff. Plenty of very good college coaches wouldn't be able to institute a totally foreign gameplan on short notice and have the guys execute it to that degree.

On the broadcast they mentioned that after the Sunday game, DP gave the boys Monday off. So this new gameplan was also instituted in one day. vcu meanwhile last played on Friday.

i'm sure the plan every game is to focus on getting the ball in the paint, but it's tough when other teams know shooting is your weakness and just sit back and clog the middle. vcu isn't a team that adjusts their pressure much & we were able to limit turnovers enough to get into the lane and capitalize. will be interesting to see if they're back settling for lots of 3s at lasalle on saturday. having a healthier marquise should help with his ability to drive.
