Didn't want to put this in the Fire Dave Paulsen thread.

But of our good recruits which of them can be a credit to Paulsen as head recruiter.

Otis is the obvious one.

AJ was Simpkins
XJ was Simpkins
Kier was Dane (to my knowledge)
Polite is Simpkins (who knows if he is good but our board is hyping the shit out of him)

Can we afford to have a head coach that can't be lead on top recruits. Are all the ones Paulsen is head recruiter on the ones we miss out on?

Looking to generate discussion not bag Paulsen

Curious as to how you find out who the "lead" recruiter is on our players? My guess would be that Simpkins was brought in with the idea that he would be the point man on all local recruits.

The only ones I know for a fact (because I talk to people that are on staff) are AJ, XJ, Otis, and what I heard about Kier. I don't know about any of the others thus I didn't bring up their names. Thats about 20 guys I have no clue about. I would assume the new guy and Paulsen led on Kolek because Simp generally leads in DMV and south (again from what I heard from reliable friend)

I believe that while Joe Paterno was Penn State's head coach, he usually left the recruiting to his assistants. But, when necessary, he went to the kid's home to close the deal.

There is one case where Paterno was at the kid's home having a pasta dinner with the parents before the wide receiver arrived home from a recruiting trip to Florida. The kid had already made up his mind that he was going to attend Florida. Paterno never even acknowledged the kid when he arrived. But, he told the mother that her sauce was even better than his mother's. Needless to say, he signed and played for Penn State before his NFL career.

One of the things my mother taught my wife right after we got married was how to make sauce. My grandmothers (both 100% Italian) made their own sauce but very different. My mom's mother's sauce was thicker and darker red, whereas my dad's mom's sauce looked more like a vodka sauce. Both were better than anything you could find in a restaurant and don't even bother me with store-bought jar sauce back then. Jar sauce now is so much better than it used to be with a lot of variety, but nothing compares to homemade. Now I'm hungry.........

I think mason was on Kolek before Hutchins came around. I’d have to double check. I suspect that was more Dave because there’s a coaching connection there (I don’t remember what exactly but I think a coach played for Dave)

Football and basketball are apples and oranges when it comes to recruiting. You have to fill 13 spots rather than 70 or whatever with scholarship athletes. While an assistant should be the one finding the recruit, most head coaches lead the way on actually closing the deal. Just like my inside sales reps set up meetings for me but it my job as a Senior Sales Exec to close the deal.

I'm obviously on the Fire Paulsen train. But I think this is normal. I think the assistant coaches do the bulk of the recruiting.

it is absolutely for an assistant to be the day to day contact with the kids AAU coach and kids parent. But from what I heard Paulsen hasn't been the closer on a couple of our recruits. That is not normal

Just look at Bergeron at UMASS if you think this is some foreign concept of assistants being a reason why a kid commits to a school and they can be closers on these recruits.

Kolek's AAU coach at Middlesex Magic was the PG on Paulsen's Natty Champ and runner up teams at Williams.

As our DMV recruiter, Simpkins is easily the most important member of our staff. For one thing, AJ would not still be at Mason if not for the extremely close relationship he has with Duane. Losing him would be devastating given his stature and relationships in our backyard.

But from the way it has been explained to me, Dave is the one who closes the deal on every kid we sign. The assistants do a lot of the legwork, but he ultimately decides whether to offer a scholarship.

The best example of that is when Dave flew all the way to California to offer Hartwell.

It def frees up Frumpy Dave to slug Diet Mountain Dews and plan/execute high level practices.

Hixon's record vs. Paulsen: 15-8.

Pablo- No question that Hixon got the best of Paulsen during the regular season.

However, if you dig a little deeper you will see that Paulsen dominated Hixon in the biggest games their respective teams played against each other, namely the NESCAC Tournament championship games and in the NCAA tournament.

Paulsen was 5-0 against Hixon in these games.

NESCAC Tournament Championship games: 3-0 ('03, '04 and '07*)

NCAA Tournament Games: 2-0. (Elite 8 game in '03 and Final Four game in '04)

*Hixon's '07 team went 30-2 and won the NCAA championship

Sorry to hijack this thread. Well, guess it is somewhat relevant in that Paulsen is a NESCAC product.

Was really looking forward to the DIII Sweet 16 before everything was shut down. My alma mater - SUNY Brockport, was matched up against Tufts after beating Middlebury. Would have been a good game - it was nice to see them match up well against the mighty NESCAC.

Kept tabs on Middlebury vs. Brockport at a Bronx bar after GMU/Fordham game. At this point, it appears I eluded the coronavirus.

Per his contract, Coach Paulsen earns another $25,000 retention bonus today - https://giantkiller.co/2019/11/06/d...ontract-emerge-including-an-attendance-bonus/:

"There are other interesting nuggets as well. Paulsen also receives a $25,000 retention bonus for remaining the coach through April 30 of a season. The buyout of Paulsen’s Bucknell contract was $250,000 to become Mason’s coach.

Academic bonuses are included too based on the team’s performance in the classroom. While not all details of the Academic Performance are public information (student-athletes’ grades), the APR score is public. If the team’s APR is higher than 950, starting in the 2017-18 season, he receives a $25,000 bonus. In the one year with an announced APR score, Mason met the mark. The remaining monies earned, which could max out at $75,000 per year, is unknown.

In short, Paulsen has received more bonuses for Mason’s performance in the classroom than on the court."

Delighted that we do well in the classroom and no one has been arrested or done anything totally stupid. Kudos to him for bringing in "nice" kids who represent the university well off the court. However, lots of coaches are able to do that and compete for championships. Make Dave the academic advisor for the program and bring in a coach who can win.
