GIVING DAY 2023
Judging by results alone I let him go this year if that's the scenario (which it's clearly not).

He had 5 seasons to get the recruiting part of his job down and he didn't do it in time to translate into meaningful seasons. Lots of guys can recruit and don't need 5 seasons to translate it into wins, we can go get one of them.

I stand by what I said before, I'd gladly lose every single recruit we have if it meant we got a new head coach. Also, who's to say that whoever we brought in couldn't convince one of them to stay? There's no rule saying that every recruit HAS to reopen recruiting because of a coaching change, at the end of the day we have no idea why a lot of these kids ultimately chose Mason, can we definitively say that playing for Paulsen was at the top of these kids lists? Maybe they like the school, location, education programs, playing opportunities, chic fil a on campus. We have no idea.

Kids commit to coaches these days in the vast majority of cases. Just the reality of the situation.

I think you guys give recruits way too much credit as far as thinking long-term. You're telling me that 17/18 year olds consider a coach's contract that much? Two years out? Sounds more like a narrative created by coaches to put leverage forth for an extension.

But these players do have coaches, parents, and "advisors" who might mention it. As well as other coaches at other colleges trying to get the kid to come to their school who would say, "I understand that Coach X is only contracted through next year"

Other than Blue Chips, has anyone made a documentary on college recruiting? FBI might have best raw footage eh?

With the loss tonight DP is now 80-81 overall. 4-12 this year in A10 play. 38-50 for his career in A10 play.

These coaches need to start winning right now, but that may not even be enough…

  • Dave Paulsen (George Mason)
    • George Mason is no longer the perennial postseason squad and NCAA Cinderella it was just a decade ago. Ever since Jim Larrañaga left, the Patriots have become an also-ran struggling to regain relevance in a competitive A-10. Paulsen came on in 2015 and has done nothing to move the needle. The highlight was the 2017 squad that won 20 games and went to CBI, but this is a program that went to five NCAAs and three NITs from 1997-2011. His fifth Patriots team might be his worst yet, sitting near the bottom of the A-10 at just 4-11 (15-13 overall).

Folks, I have it on VERY STRONG authority from a HIGHLY REPUTABLE source that ALL of the players that are eligible to return next season want to return. Additionally, it was related to me that if everyone wants and is able to stay then Coach Dave and the AD will find a way to keep them. Yes, this includes Justin Kier, Ian Boyd, AJ Wilson, and surprisingly, JDS.

It turns out that the players have much deeper faith in, and affinity for, Coach Dave than
some (ever assuming:eggonface:) Mason fans do. Hmmmmmm?... :googlyeyed:

Not surprised, but this will be the debated topic all offseason on here haha. But that is good news. Hopefully Kier gets his waiver and we’ll see where the other chips fall.

but like that isn't how scholarships work unless 2 of them stay on as walk on's. why would anybody want to do that? I have also heard different but no need for a who's source is best measuring contest. Saying your theory is correct how does the math work?

Certainly. We have too many deniers and anti-fans invested in the FIRE DAVE PAULSEN Summer Day Camp for Disgruntled and Delusional Little Boys.

Beats me how the scenario is feasible. I'm simply telling it as it was told to me.

It's BS from the athletic department, they never admit their stellar student-athletes aren't 100% committed to the program until they are gone...

There are plenty of other scholarships that they could use including Academic and Postgraduate scholarships.

Can you name an example in NCAA mens basketball that a top 8 roster player was on an academic scholarship rather than a basketball one? Because AJ, Boyd or Kier would be that on our roster next year and at least one would have to be on academic or postgraduate scholarships if what you are saying is true. Wouldn't every basketball team be doing this?

From the NCAA D1 2012-2013 manual

15.02.4.3 Exempted Institutional Financial Aid.

The following institutional financial aid is exempt and is not counted in determining the institution’s financial aid limitations: (Revised: 4/29/04 effective 8/1/04)

(a) An honorary award for outstanding academic achievement or an established institutional research grant that meets the criteria set forth in Bylaw 15.02.6 (and must be included in determining if the student athlete’s
cost of attendance has been met); (Revised: 1/10/91, 1/10/92, 10/31/02 effective 8/1/03)

(b) A postgraduate scholarship awarded by an institution in accordance with Bylaw 16.1.4.1.1; (Adopted: 4/25/02)

(c) Federal government grants awarded based on a student’s demonstrated financial need [e.g., Supplemental Educational Opportunities Grant (SEOG)], regardless of whether the institution is responsible for selecting the recipient or determining the amount of aid, or providing matching or supplementary funds for a previously determined recipient; (Adopted: 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11)

(d) State government grants awarded based on a student’s demonstrated financial need, regardless of whether the institution is responsible for selecting the recipient or determining the amount of aid, or providing matching or supplementary funds for a previously determined recipient, provided the aid is administered in accordance with the federal methodology for determining a student’s financial need and has no relationship to athletics ability. However, such aid is not exempt for purposes of determining a football or basketball student-athlete’s counter status pursuant to Bylaw 15.5.1.2; (Adopted: 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11)

(e) State government merit-based grants, regardless of whether the institution is responsible for selecting the recipient or determining the amount of aid, or providing matching or supplementary funds for a previously determined recipient, provided the aid is awarded consistent with the criteria of Bylaws 15.5.3.2.2.1, 15.5.3.2.2.2 or 15.5.3.2.2.3 and has no relationship to athletics ability. However, such aid is not exempt for purposes of determining a football or basketball student-athlete’s counter status pursuant to Bylaw 15.5.1.2; and (Adopted: 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11)

(f ) Matching payments made by the Department of Veterans Affairs pursuant to the Yellow Ribbon G.I. Education Enhancement Program [see Bylaw 15.2.5.1-(e)]. (Adopted: 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11)

The “ institution’s financial aid limitations” is the total athletic scholarships money available for that sport and has an upper limit set by the NCAA (i.e. number of equivalent scholarships).

If this was true schools like Duke would basically have a second string squad on the bench in waiting just in case of injury

If they had players qualify for medical redshirt then perhaps. I guess rules change a little if a kid gets a MR. Maybe schools are allowed more players but would a coach want 15 or 16 on roster. PT issues. Practices gonna be insanely great next year. LOL

I just wish the school would be transparent like it did with Grayer and Arledge when they got injured (i.e. seek a medical redshirt). We clearly knew both were transferring.

We know we have already backfilled Kier and Boy's scholarships. Why don't they come out and say, we currently don't have any scholarships avilable for 20-21 season, but would be delighted to have one or the other or even both back next year if we have openings (i.e. transfers) during the offseason, and if they are granted a medical redshirt.

Honestly, if they don't return to GMU next year, I hope both do a Grad Year at William and Mary with former Asst. Dane Fischer. Dude did outstanding this year with a roster of Grad Transfers and holdovers. School record most road wins, most CAA wins (13), most wins (21) in 50 years.
