I've heard similar stories to this (although they did not include acceptance/non-acceptance into the university) as well as Dr. Gunnie's. I really thought Edwards would have come in and cleaned house like what the new AD at GW when he came in (within months of taking the job, all the fundraising, marketing and some PR folks were replaced). Maybe Edwards wanted to give everyone a chance to show him what they can do under his leadership. I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt to get his house in order. Changing a culture in an office is difficult.
The key was the father was a graduate, the grandfather was a tenured professor at the time and the kid was no slouch in academics. As he said...you would think his application file might have got flagged or discussed somehow for special consideration?
One can argue the merits of "legacy"....but it does go to the argument about Mason not building tradition and cohesiveness....esp with alumni. Until Mason realizes that alumni need more than just diversity stories...they will not energize the base.
