Mason does that all the time, for all departments. My brother works in the library - hiring freeze there I believe.
Besides Hewitt, crappy athletics fundraising will be the lasting legacies of Merten and TOC.
I think it's safe to say that most of us need to seriously step up our game when it comes to donations.
Well, with Hewitt as coach, we are about to graduate a Class of 2015 that has seen nothing but regression in their 4 years at Mason........Only 1300 donors at such a large school is truly terrible. I think the ball is being dropped at creating the experience as an undergrad to make them want to turn around and donate/return to homecoming/become a season ticket holder/etc. Build the foundation with the undergrads and the alumni will take care of themselves.
From Cabrera's Q&A:
http://newsdesk.gmu.edu/2015/02/president-cabreras-qa-donations-construction-circus/
"When asked if changes will be made to the basketball program to bolster the team, Cabrera noted that despite a losing record, the team puts Mason on national television several times a year.
“We are very proud of them,” he said, adding that all sports undergo reviews at the end of their respective seasons."
That's a terrifying answer.
It's what he has to say publicly, 99.
If he really believes it's a good thing for us to get our asses handed to us on national TV several times a year, that's a terrifying thought.
Mason will also need to find a way to increase the number of donors per the latest information from the Patriot Club:
It's what he has to say publicly, 99.

Nothing builds a foundation like winning consistently. Must eliminate Hewitt...Only 1300 donors at such a large school is truly terrible.
