Countdown to Hewitt's Next Longevity Bonus

Mason has to decide what they are going to spend in terms of the next coach, his assistants, etc. Don't expect based on the press for Hewitt being the highest paid state employee and failing, that Mason is going to keep spending $ on the next coach.

So, you are saying that the additional cost to the school of firing Hewitt could be significantly less than his base salary for the final year of his contract as the school faces pressure to reduce the coaches' pay & other related costs?

As pointed out above, I doubt Mason is going to spend the money they have spent on Hewitt again on the next coach. And following the assumption they will target a young assistant, they can down grade the asst pay across the board too.

I was changing the argument/perception about the "bad taste" of eating the last year of his contract. That money is spent no matter what. It's digesting the initial year cost of hiring the new coach for the overlap but then there's more savings in the following years with less overhead in coaching salaries in total.

Look at it this way...Hewitt makes $700k, and new young upcoming assistant might make $400? That's almost a 2 for 1 year trade in terms of salary. It will suck the first year, but then the cost savings go way up.

(Barely holding back vomit) We need to put our new coach on the Shaka Smart plan: Low initial salary, but big money available for raises/program investments when justified by on-court performance.

Crap, now I need a towel.

Absolutely. Competitive base....but the incentives are what you get the big bucks.

You don't have to call that the Shaka Smart plan really -- Archie Miller's salary was $335,000 last year and the second he reached the Sweet Sixteen (he wasn't even done winning yet) the AD 0ffered him a new contract.

Just 28 more days until Coach Hewitt earns his 4th longevity bonus of $85,000 at Mason.

I honestly didn't know he received one EVERY year. What a CROCK X 4!

The only thing that might be dumber than handing out a longevity bonus on March 1st was including a longevity bonus in Hewitt's contract in the first place, since they paid L a $75K longevity bonus on 4/1/2011 -- and then watched him walk 3 weeks later. Fool me once, shame on L; fool me twice, shame on TOC and Merten.

Plus, realistically Hewitt wasn't going anywhere. If he had been successful here then he would have been appreciated and he would have stayed. Just another example of O'Conner being the biggest dumbass in the history of college sports.

Wait, did Hewitt somehow infiltrate the bodies of Pete Carroll and Darrell Bevill in the final minute of the Super Bowl?

That's the only possible explanation for why the Seahawks chose to pass instead of running BeastMode from the 1-yard-line with a second consecutive title on the line.

If the point is to reward loyalty and discourage departures like Coach L's, then the longevity bonus for Hewitt should have been moved later (say, May 1), not earlier.

I have no problem with a longevity bonus if this is the standard practice. Obviously, the arbitrary date during the regular season of March 1 is nonsensical unless the school would seriously consider evaluating his annual performance and terminating his contract prior to this date.

I doubt that Hewitt would have agreed to a date later than March 30, which is when Larranaga earned his longevity bonus here. But, March 30 would certainly make a lot more sense than March 1.

Would be more fitting if he agreed to April 1...

Actually, I could see it working exactly the opposite.

If you have enough wealthy boosters who are willing to pay a buyout, you can literally fire a coach whenever you want. The boosters at GT got so fed up with Hewitt that they finally decided to bite a $7M bullet to make him leave.

Mason obviously doesn't have anywhere near that kind of money (duh).

This is the reality some people here are ignoring. My biggest concern isn't whether Edwards or Cabrera have the vision to make the right call, it's whether they can get enough money to make the call they want to make.

A buddy of mine who works in the newspaper industry follows state politics and revenue closely. He said it's not easy for a state school like Mason to justify eating $700,000 when they are simultaneously asking for money from the state to fund other academic programs.

As Jim pointed out, much if not all of the money needed to fire our coach would have to come from private donations. And judging from some of the people here who have pulled their contributions — which they are certainly entitled to do — it sounds like we might be going in the wrong direction.

So what's the over/under on attendance next year if Hewitt is back? I'm not counting the 8000 vcu fans that come. But rather actual Mason people.
