Countdown to Hewitt's Next Longevity Bonus

You and me both, but many people at a learning institution also look on that $700,000 as the equivalent of 8 or 9 full-time professors they could be paying/hiring. It's easy for us as basketball fans to see the rationale behind eating $700,000, but convincing a board of trustees that sees no value in basketball even at the height of our success is a much tougher sell.

That's why the powers that be have to educate them, that the $700k you speak of was and will be never used to hire those professors.

The $700k is Hewitt's whether he coaches here or not next year. That money is spent.

Its selling them that the "extra" $500K??? to pay the new coach is really what they are parting with for one year. As well as what will be the budget for the next coaching regime. Will they pay to resurrect, or did they move to the A-10 to spend the least amount, but hope the association and NCAA payouts make it worthwhile compared to the CAA.

If the value of bball program has to be explained to them, we are in trouble. Hopefully, Brad can make the clear arguement (2nd time in 3 years) to fire this Clown. Or even better, make him resign. A losing program is never a good thing. Whether its bball or engineering.

That's what we thought after our Final 4 run, which I think we all agree was a squandered opportunity by the university. The huge difference is we now have a president and AD who hopefully don't see athletics as a side door into the university. We'l find out in the next few months if that is indeed the case.

Yes, I think the next 2-3 months is going to be a big test for BE and AC. If they pass, Mason could be on the way to recovering from this debacle. If they fail, I would guess it means that our basketball program is doomed for at least a decade.

"As we are coming to the latter part of the season, now is not the time to be judgmental. You all need to come out and support this team.

Are you a critic or a supporter of this team? Supporters will continue to watch this team fight.

To you critics: when athletes say some of the things you say, then you condemn them as quitters. Are you quitting?

I believe in this team!

Their effort and level of commitment should never be questioned.

realize we still have work to do but no one should ever question the effort, intelligence, or dedication of our program.

Our team deserves to be treated truthfully."

If only we had that kinda media pressure on him here.

The gmu student paper hasnt shed one ounce of attention on the demise of the program. Sad.

When I was sports editor of Broadside, I ran a lengthy column about Nestor's struggles that was headlined "Ernie must go."

He was seriously pissed, as expected -- especially having to take criticism from a 22-year-old kid who had barely earned a dime as a writer -- but he couldn't argue the fact that once Barnes' players moved on the program went straight into the toilet.

A similar headline for Hewitt is long past due.

I believe they have had trouble hiring sportswriters.

Perhaps no one wants to write about a terrible basketball team.

KA,

I agree that Hewitt's base salary for the final year on his contract has been obligated (vice spent) and the additional cost incurred would be the new coach's pay for the same year.

But, I'm not sure what you mean by "As well as what will be the budget for the next coaching regime".

Mason has to decide what they are going to spend in terms of the next coach, his assistants, etc. Don't expect based on the press for Hewitt being the highest paid state employee and failing, that Mason is going to keep spending $ on the next coach.
