Because he’ll be in the tournament every year, stay in the DMV, and—most importantly—make at least an extra million dollars.

Hate to break it to you, but that extension means nothing except Mason getting a bigger buyout when he leaves.
Mason basically doubling Tony's salary means nothing?

How long have we complained about Mason's commitment to basketball? There's a very good chance any of the previous admin/AD combos would have botched this contract extension/salary increase and given Tony every reason to leave immediately after this season....whether to UMD or another P4 opportunity.

Here’s a factor I think a lot of folks are overlooking with regard to Willard likely leaving Maryland for Villanova and its implications for Tony or anyone else being interested in the Maryland job: The House settlement is poised to change how people view basketball jobs even at traditional top 20/30 programs like College Park.

Football, being the main revenue driver even for schools that are barely competitive, is gonna get most of the revenue share. This is because with the coming consolidation of football conferences into a Power 2, everyone is scrambling to position themselves to get into either the SEC or Big Ten. Everyone else may as well be playing Division 2 … and nobody wants to be stuck there.

While they obviously generate far less TV revenue, it’s easy to see basketball-focused schools becoming more attractive to coaches simply because they’ll no longer have to settle for the rev share scraps that fall from the table of the football program.

That’s especially so at schools like Maryland, Kansas, Duke and others, which are clearly competing for national championships in basketball but will be second-class citizens to mediocre football when it comes to revenue allocations.

FKE's failure at PC may help us out in Maryland's willingness to take a 2nd year coach from George Mason. Sure, we all know Tony is a better coach than Kimmie, but their new AD and, certainly, their fans don't.

Would I take $3M over $1.8M when the fans will turn on me in a heartbeat? Or would I stay at my alma mater where the fans love me and will give me the benefit of the doubt if I have a bad season? I don't know Tony personally, but I think I know what he would choose.

Three million is a low bar when you consider the current market and Maryland’s situation. Ben McCollum, who was a Division II coach two years ago, is reportedly making $3.5 million at Iowa. While he won an NCAA Tournament game this year, Iowa is historically a less prominent job than Maryland, which has significantly more resources and expectations. If Iowa is setting the floor at $3.5 million for a first-time high-major coach, Maryland—especially in a late-cycle, high-pressure situation—will have to go higher.

Maryland is also getting a buyout check from Villanova, giving them more financial flexibility. Given the optics of hiring so late in the process and needing to make a strong move, they’re unlikely to nickel-and-dime a candidate. If Skinn is their choice, he should easily be in the $3.5–$4 million range, if not higher, based on market trends.

That said, your point about Skinn’s connection to the Willard tree is a valid one. The backlash against Willard might make Maryland hesitant to bring in anyone associated with him, even indirectly. Combine that with Maryland’s current PR crisis and the fact that Skinn, despite his clear upside, has only two years of head coaching experience in a relatively low-pressure media environment, and it’s fair to question whether he’s the right fit for their situation.

This is getting ugly in College Park

In the midst of Maryland's NCAA Tournament run, the Terrapin fans have turned on head coach Kevin Willard as coaching drama continues.
Absolutely NO WAY Tony walks into that!
Relax, guys.

You also have to consider that whoever accepts the Maryland job will be leaving an opening somewhere else.

Living in MD this Willard thing is wild. A lot of MD fans don't get the reality that they're AD is poverty and that they don't have a big donor base in relative terms. My favorite thing to do when a UMD "fan" questions why they can't spend more money is to ask how much they donated. The silence of the answer is deafening. I then ask if they bought season tickets to basketball or football. Also, silence. They could get lucky with Buzz, but he's not a long term answer. The guy clearly gets antsy/wears out his welcome at places.
