Phil Martelli. Martelli knows the Atlantic 10 and I don't think he wants being fired from Saint Joseph's to be his last chapter as a head coach.

Hiring an older coach worked for Iona/It is already working for Saint John's. It would be nice not being a WaWa convenience store stop on "the road to fortune and glory".
Interesting choice. Mad respect for posting. Not sure I agree but options are always a good thing.

Because I think English overachieved and people here are vastly discrediting what he actually accomplished. While i'm pissed he left and I think there are a lot of feelings going around and I think there's blame to go all the way around I do however think he did achieve some things.

I'll be honest, I don't think the Mason job is that desirable. I think coaches talk, I think kids see what's going around. I think recruiting to mason is going to be harder now. Every year that goes by just makes it that much worse. Knowing what English just did, the next coach may be just as likely to jump as well. It is going to be really hard to recruit anyone. I think with the exception of Tony Skinn who actually cares about Mason it's going to be hard to convince a kid that the next coach is all in!

I think the admin has a lot of issues preventing any coach from achieving real success in the A10. I think this is a much much bigger project than anyone wants to admit. If it's going to be built the right way and have long term success than it can't just be another flash in the pan who gets 20 wins and bounces.
So you want to win 8 games next year, because you think that somehow makes it easier to win 20 games 3 years from now? Success breeds success, and Kim literally just proved that even in a complete rebuild, you don't have to be complete trash in year one. I think you are overestimating how much 15 and 16 year old kids are paying attention to the drama of an athletic department.

While there is a good chance mason may be close or in the pig next year with 7 or 8 league wins, there’s no reason to have a year worse than what Kim had in year 1.

Now granted it’s slightly different because most likely this is going to be a mostly full roster import from the portal or late 23 guys than what Kim had leftover. But there’s no reason why a respectable year can’t be expected in year 1. This is not Year 1 of paulsen when transferring isn’t as big.

SLU fans would be quick to tell you their guy is better :ROFLMAO:
No disrespect to Yuri....he has the highest assist rate (Kenpom) in Div 1--Nowell is #2. On the other hand, Yuri's never gotten 19 in a Sweet 16 game! In Madison Square Garden, no less.

For me, Markquis' game was still more "spectacular" in delivering those assists (no look, behind-the-back, between his legs, etc.) than anything I've seen, especially in someone 5' 8". Had 5 steals as well, including the one that sealed the game.

Admittedly, as a K-State alum, I'm a bit biased. I'd be happy to have either one on Mason's team!

I think if you want to win 20 games in the short term You have to go get pretty much 5 transfers. High School or 3-4 year players aren't going to come pilling in that can win 20 games. English didn't do that! The high school kids didn't even play for the most part.

Outside Fernandez, who did English really bring in that were impact high schoolers?

How does that help long term success? They will be here 1 year and bounce? Is someone really going to be able to pull that off? Every year 5 new starters? Eventually if they have any success they will go somewhere with a lot more money at a bigger school where others do it for him.

Of course everyone wants to win more! I don't know what high schoolers are even left that can make up a team that can win 15-18 games day 1!

Maybe mason donors start to do things that raise donations and the new coach can buy players every year. TBD.....

I think you have to have some faith that the new coach is going to be able to convince some of the roster to stick around. There were 6 new coaches in the A10 this year and none of them has to completely rebuild a roster with 10+ players. English had 8 holdovers (included I think every freshmen commitment) from Paulsen’s roster

Paulsen won 20 games in his second year too and as we know he did that with holdovers from the Hewitt era (Marquise, Jenkins) and the freshmen he recruited in his first two years (Otis, Grayer, Boyd, Kier, Newman — AJ is in here too but he didn’t do much for his first two years). And let’s be honest, outside of AJ and Boyd none of these players were coming in with any kind of fanfare.

So, if the next coach is any kind of coach and recruiter, you should have some faith that he can match or exceed both Paulsen and English in year two.

No player picks the school because of the school's SAT rankings. It's all about the coach.

So if coach leaves can they follow? If they can't then the question becomes do they think they want to try to play for the next coach or find a better opportunity?

I think the only saving grace we would have is if the next coach is Tony Skinn. He's there because he wants to be. He's not making up a sales pitch because he arrived 10 minutes ago because of a paycheck.

"See that FF 4 banner....I fought for that thing....hard. Heck I almost didn't get it because I punched a guy in the nuts. IM READY IF YOU ARE...."

We are all placing a lot of hope in the fact that not only is Tony called but hired. Any truth to this? Has he even been called yet? Not a lot of noise about him anywhere.

Why does anyone have faith that Mason does this right? Let’s be real, if we find out he was never even called. Would that surprise anyone?

Sorry but until I see something actually done by a pretty much out of touch athletic department, why should I believe?

We want Tony however does anyone on here actually have that power? Do any fans, boosters, donors whatever you want to call it really have the power to change anything? These boards haven’t changed since 2011, people were yelling for change back then. What exactly has changed? We’ve fired a few coaches, we’ve fired a few ads. We jumped leagues and instead of spending at the top of one league we’re now in the bottom of another.

The game day experience is no different, the quality of the team is no better. To the casual fan who doesn’t follow RPI, Kenpom, roi and how much the coach costs has anything really truly changed?

Until I see it, I’m just expecting Mason to run right back to a ‘safe hire’ who won’t get anyone excited and will grind it out for 5 years. 1 or 2 seasons they may hit 20 wins and some people will talk about the ‘improved’ investments coming in a decade.

A lot of this is unfortunately true.

We aren’t at the bottom of the conference in spending we are in the middle:

Teams who spent more than us:

Dayton
vcu
SLU
Duquense
Loyola-Chicago
Richmond
St. Joes

Teams who spent less than us:

URI
Fordham
St. Bonaventure
George Washington
Davidson
UMass

And embarrassingly below everyone:

La Salle

We are quite literally in the middle of the pack with Richmond, St. Joes, Loyola, GW, and Fordham all within a few 100k of us.

By the way, SDSU spent 56k more than Richmond last year, $1.7 million less than Dayton…

Oh, and to put this into perspective, we rank 102nd nationally in basketball spending, which is in the top third of division 1, but obviously quite far below the big spenders (Kentucky’s budget is about 500% more than ours, for example).

If we get Odom, that sends the message that basketball is important at Mason. We would have to pay, what, $2M plus?

Wasn't it Martelli who said a few years ago that "Mason doesn't belong in the A10"?
