Average Home Attendance

The program has been dormant, fairly irrelevant, for 14 years. 2-3 seasons of 20 plus win seasons, deep runs in the A-10 tournament, an NIT bid or 2 (gasp even an NCAA birth) will get butts back in the seats. Casual fans fill in the seats at the end of the day and you can't win them over by being an also-ran of a program.

I heard some of the students say at last year's homecoming tailgate, and even my brother's stepdaughter who goes to Mason, "We don't care about the basketball team". When queried further about the team or were they going to the game, they answer a question with a question "Don't we suck???"

That's the problem! They have to ask rabid alumni fans like me whether we suck or not!!

It's a matter of messaging.

Maybe we need new marketing people rather than the ones listed in the screenshot if the average student thinks we suck despite a decent record. Or maybe it is a generational thing...

Clearly the "fan engagement" isn't working.

In my day at Mason we had a student newspaper that covered games. The only way to find out game scores when I didn't attend games was to pick up that paper and read it.

My point is that I was engaged and interested in the team's outcomes. Now, there are information sources everywhere as to game scores, team success, conference standings, highlights, etc. Yet, engagement is anemic. Is the problem information overload?

I can't fathom there being a lack of interest in spectator sports when other teams can gather fairly good student support. Are fans, and particularly students, REALLY entertained better at other schools' men's basketball events than Mason's?

When I became enamored with attending Mason men's basketball games it was originally because the team was hot and word-of-mouth got me to a game. During the game, the atmosphere was tense, but raucus—especially in the student section. I continued to attend games even through the lean years because I liked supporting the team with my voice and clapped hands.

So, for me Mason fandom was being in the atmosphere of the game. A hot team for me started it and I stayed for the experience. Currently, we don't have either. I have no solution to offer other than win baby, win.

Long time reader and I used to work basketball camps at GMU when Nyla Milleson and Paul Hewitt were coaching.

I know Nyla from my time at Missouri State.

I just accepted a job in Fairfax this week! I am looking forward to attending as many games as possible! I went to the GMU and Duquesne game last year and what an atmosphere. I was super impressed with how into it the crowd seemed. Looking forward to supporting the Patriots!

Yes, they are but every school is experiencing lagging student support relative to prior years because students are more engaged on social media playing video.games like fortnite or tiktok etc etc. They find that more entertaining.

My experience is that those who are sports heads prefer to be on their laptops so they can place bets. Betting and fantasy sports is where their attention is. Hard to pay attention to 10 different games if you’re in person at 1.

Now they will go to the big events. homecoming and the Big 12 championship games were hugely popular and I heard even students who had expressed no real interest in sports up to then making plans to go to those two games this year.

I've only been to two away games over the past four seasons, @GW and @JMU (2021-22). I wasn't too impressed by the game-day experience at either venue. Smith Center in DC is horrible and had nothing going on to note. JMU's new arena is nice, but as far as in-game entertainment—I witnessed nothing special or better than what Mason does.

I guess it won't be long before basketball is AI generated. Or, students will sit in their dorm rooms asking Sailor Moon to take off her top.

The team IS winning. The question is whether an NCAA appearance is what's needed to get more people to care.

What I don't like to think about is the possibility that they might not even care even if we were to win the A10 or make it as an at large.

I'd remind people of that.
Look at the backlash that got. Look at how that was "blamed" for the cost of attending Mason.

We have deeper cultural issues for whatever reason. We need to "sell" our students that going to a game and supporting a team is a good thing.

Does the Director of Fan Engagement realize this or do these marketing people just collect their paycheck and call it a day?

People would care if we made it to the dance but people also see through the yearly 10-4 OOC record. They aren’t fooled by beating the brakes off of ITT Tech.

I wonder if having an annual holiday adjacent tournament in Fairfax (GMU hosts against 3 other teams) would be something to get a bit of buzz going. Even if they set themselves up to lose by having 1-2 good brand names schools come into town could get some butts in seats.

How much are those teams being paid to come play and who is paying them?

Yes, we are winning. But until we stop losing to teams that we should beat (this happens like clockwork every single year), and are fighting for an NIT or NCAA bid, today's "fans" just won't show.
