Who hired Hutchins to begin with? Is it same guy who cant build a roster? Is it same guy who without Simpk would be lost?

Yep. So what is he, 1 outta 5 on coaching hires and many whiffs on player side.

his other two took head coaching jobs, so I wouldn’t call that a failure necessarily.

And who knows why Pete Hutchins left? He was only here one year. We can’t really evaluate him right now. He went out and found Henry and Frazier. Let’s see how they pan out in the A10 before we say Hutchins was a failure here.

Bryson Johnson is just starting his career, so let’s give him a chance too.

Think you are correct. He identified guys (inc Henry) who's stats would translate to the A10. I think Frazier was probably on that shortlist Dave talked about and I think Pete helped with that too.

I'm thinking they'll probably go get some sort of middle of the road assistant since Bryson is the youngest and Duane is the most senior. Probably someone Dave has worked with before for sure though.

Gotta wonder how much longer Duane is going to stick around, he’s getting pretty due for a shot at a small program himself. Whoever we replace should be pretty experienced, there’s a real chance by next summer he could be the top assistant.

those two who took head coaching jobs also were under dave for 10 plus years. I think Pete probably felt more comfortable being more of a prep school coach at this point versus d1. I know he did New Hampton for a while. Can’t blame him for doing what he wants and getting a good position.

agreed. Just depends on what he wants too. Does he want to be a head coach or a deputy still? Have to think at some point he will get an opportunity though. He certainly has helped improve the recruit quality and find talent in the dmv.

If we finish 9th and under .500 in the A10 we might be overturning the entire coaching staff next summer...

Big facts. Gotta make it through this year I guess haha. If I’m an up and coming assistant, this isn’t the ship I’m jumping on right now. High risk, not a ton of reward.

There will be plenty of interest in this position. There aren’t that many that come open every year and even fewer with the pandemic. Coaches on the come up would jump at the chance to put an A-10 job on their resume.

I don't disagree that it should happen if 9th and under .500 happens that there should be a change.

However, as I've said and continue to beat the horse on, I'm skeptical that would happen for various reasons.

Yeah . . . Dane wasn't a good assistant? You're so eager to find a bone to pick with DP that you totally ignore facts.

He was not in my opinion. As head a recruiter he clearly lacked the know how in signing the correct pedigree for this conf. He might good enough for the caa, but time will tell. Although we should remember it all starts at the top. The fact is retention, recruitment and winning is not in synch under this coach.

Quite a limb you're out on.

"In six [Bucknell] recruiting classes, Fischer brought in a total of fourteen All-League Selections, including eight on the 1st team and five All-Rookie picks. Fischer also recruited three Patriot League Player of the Year Award winners in Nana Foulland, Cameron Ayers and two-time recipient Mike Muscala. . .
Under Fischer’s guidance as the program’s recruiting coordinator, the staff landed the two winningest classes in Bucknell basketball history. . .
Also acting as the [Rider's] recruiting coordinator, Fischer brought three all-conference and two all-rookie performers to the Lawrenceville, N.J., campus, and the 2011 class graduated with the most career wins in program history."

But sounds like everything good is attributable to Simpkins. Got it. A coach you didn't like is leaving the program and that's a bad thing? Discredit DP for it, but give him no credit for finding good assistants in Fischer and Simpkins?

Look, DP has enough objective flaws that you don't have to go out on such limbs to pick at them. I like to start with a .8 assist-to-turnover ratio (314th in D1) personally. Maybe you'd like to pick at the slow starts (328th in first half points per game)? With numbers like that, i'm not sure why we have to devolve our criticisms into half-baked ideas about assistant coaches.

Are we saying that if Otis, Grayer, Boyd, and Mar don't all get hurt in back to back seasons?

I think he might be bipolar. Just two months ago he shit on @tblack33 myself and others for saying paulsen should be fired. He said he was “a good coach and good recruiter”. I think paulsen is bad but at least I stick with one side. I do agree that he may have already been let go without Duane. Don’t think that’s a reach either...

Sounds like Fischer did good at Bucknell. Is that the reason you referenced the Bucknell history? Who the hell said anything about Bucknell? I said he wasn't able to recruit the A10 level pedigree at Mason.

"A coach You didnt like is leaving..." I never said I didnt like Hutch.

Quite a limb you are on aye? More like a twig.

Dane has a successful track record. Won CAA coach of the year in his first attempt. Was a finalist for new coach of the year and mid major coach of the year. Widely regarded as a good, young coach. Lead recruiter of the most successful player in the DP era here. If you think he isn't a good coach and wasn't a good assistant, you lack for company.

By comparison, how is Simpkins (who you like more for some reason) a better assistant? His track record isn't anywhere near as good as Dane's. Nothing too impressive from his time at Towson or UNCG.

No Nathan Knight and your entire statement is out the window. Lets what he does post Knight. I never said he wasn't a good coach. I said he couldn't recruit what Mason needed to compete in the A10. Why do you keep making shit up?

I'm sure Dane is well respected and an overall good person. I just don't think he did his best work when he was at the highest and most challenging level of his career. He simply could not get us the players we needed. Seems to be doing good at the low major level though.

Simpk hasn't worked for same guy for 10 years. Alot can be accomplished and a lot can be hidden when you stay with the same head coach. Caputo is a good example. Nobody is going to point out that Dane sucked as a recruiter in the A10 except for me and a few other Mason fans. For example, you mentioned his success at Bucknell b/c you couldn't find anything good on him at Mason. All you did find was his current accolades from a season led by a NBA prospect, whom btw Mason via The Virus offered and then pulled the scholly (DP) on.

Simpk will be a great head coach one day. I hope its mid season next year that he gets his start.

I think this is what you call an upgrade in our assistant coaching ranks.

Per Steven Goff of the Post:
Former @GW_MBB head coach Maurice Joseph joining @MasonMBB as an assistant after one year on staff at Fairleigh Dickinson, source says. Also, Duane Simpkins expected to receive promotion on GMU staff and become associate head coach under @PaulsenDave.
