I have said for years that the first and most obvious step is to eliminate the "family" atmosphere that the university seems to want to cultivate. It's college basketball for crying out loud. We should have Homecoming before every game! Loosen up and let people get a bit rowdy. Maybe, just maybe, the students and younger alumni would buy in if they knew they weren't going to be policed. If I ever get to the point that the noise or atmosphere bothers me then guess what, I'll stay home and watch it on TV. I'm not advocating drunken riots in the stands but we sure don't have any home court advantage with our current atmosphere. Youth league halftime games? Preteen cheerleaders? Scouts? WTH?

The AD needs to get out of the way at this point. Their involvement with rebranding the Patriot Platoon was pretty pathetic. The restrictions they throw onto tailgating are ridiculous. Even shutting down fan made cheer sheets, like wtf level of ridiculous.

Agreed but in any final solution (not the Hitler one) there has to be unison/collaboration.

I can see now that they did it as an easy way to boost attendance number. For every little tyke performing at halftime they bring 3-4 family members buying tickets. They are uninterested in the game itself but it’s a butt in the seat and a number on the attendance announcements. It’s really showing now that we can’t sell 250 tickets a game.

There are so many small things that must be done to up Mason's coolness factor. For instance, VHSL plays its public school championship games at Siegel.

Not saying we can/do that here, but how do we drum up local interest in Mason? State interest? There are ways to do it, I'm just not sure the university/AD has any kind of coherent strategy to do it.

I enjoyed watching the Northern Region games when they were held at the Patriot Center. The games were exciting, well attended, and provided an opportunity to see future Mason players like Rob Anderson & Mark Davis.

Exactly. Now, that may or may not be feasible now, I dont know, but that sort of thing builds Mason rep.

My dad would take me to soccer games when hooliganism was still a thing. I remember an international match of Czechoslovakia vs. France where they didn’t even make it past the opening kickoff before chairs were being ripped out and thrown at opposing fans and that didn’t stop us from going (in fact it made me love live soccer even more).

I think some mildy drunken college kids having fun and throwing a few inappropriate phrases and gestures will be fine.

It’s honestly part of the charm of college athletics. It’s inappropriate for old men to do at pro games, but is expected and part of the experience of college games.

I feel like Dawn Hicks deserves her own “Fire” thread. The fact that she is a spokesperson for the department while clearly being extremely out of touch is staggering to me, although I guess it shouldn’t be. It’s scary to think that this is a common way of thinking within the department. I can imagine the Patriot Club isn’t thrilled with it all.

I’ve said it a few times over the years, but this Josh Holman situation is the perfect example. Mason has been in the business of turning its fans into customers. A fan sticks by no matter what, and a customer finds something else to buy when they no longer like a product. I don’t know Josh, never met the man, never talked to him, but it looks like Ms. Hicks was the final nail in turning probably the biggest fan of them all into a customer, and there are probably several members of the “fan base” that are considering the exact same thing.

When you have an entire floor of your house dedicated to Mason memorabilia I think that constitutes you as a die hard fan. With how dirty they did him there’s some serious problems in the AD. No one thought to come up on the net and tell her to shut it down for the night?

"The Votes Are In—and Josh Holman is Mason’s Biggest Fan
By Leah Kerkman Fogarty on July 26, 2010

Josh Holman was voted Mason's Biggest Fan in a public vote.

There were six worthy finalists for the Mason’s Biggest Fan contest, but two leaders broke away from the pack early on and never looked back.

Josh Holman and Joe Little, both mega Mason sports fans, got the public’s attention in a big way. Throughout the week, they traded the lead back and forth in a tight race while their fans rallied around them and voted furiously, commenting on the Mason Spirit blog and on Facebook with their support.

In the end, at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday evening, Josh Holman pulled out the win with a narrow margin of 82 votes."

Does anyone know whether Joe Little, a former Mason walk-on basketball player, is still a fan?

they really barked up the wrong tree. It’s one thing if it’s me, you, or various others on here. It’s not right but it’s different.

But to go after someone like Holman who like you said, is probably the biggest fan of them all is extremely tone deaf and insensitive. I do know the AD is aware and probably very embarrassed right now, but it appears it’s way too slow at this point because someone really needed to say delete the tweets and apologize on Saturday. It’s a big deal, and in today’s connected world, it didn’t need to wait.

that said none of this is surprising. Considering everyone else’s stories on here and our own experiences that we may have not put on here, it speaks to how the AD as a whole operates and sees us.

Would it have been handled differently for members of the Green Coat Society?

Crazy couple of days.

I’m still not really sure why she decided to come after me with the not a fan business. In all honesty, I’m one of the least negative people out there. I've probably been more loyal to a fault. I’ve never called out a player or the staff ever on social media. Others do frequently (which is their right), but why come after me when all I said was I have lost interest in the program. Still not sure.

My only explanation is she was coming to help her pal swimmom, our favorite Mason fan, who was telling me how much damage I was doing to our players and what an awful person I was to lose interest in our program. I have no idea.

Anyway, I’ve come to the conclusion that Mason and a Mason athletics isn’t the priority that it once was. Symbolically tearing down the Mason room was me moving on. Felt pretty good honestly.

I’m not unique as many others have gone though the process, but what makes this a little different is it was done on social media for a handful to see.

A few have asked if I’ve heard from anyone at the athletic department. I have not, nor do I expect to. My donation amounts over the years have gone down, and at this point I know it’s not worth their energy to reach out. That’s the game this day and age, which is sad because at a school like Mason I feel like you need everyone you can get onboard. I would imagine if I was still in Northern Va and a season ticket holder with my patriot club passes, I’d get a call or an email. Mason has become the ultimate “what can you do for me” business. The few that would keep in touch with me - the Ruges of the world, they are gone.

I’ll still watch the games. Gone are the days of driving a few hours to support or soccer team or baseball team play for the A10 championships. I don’t see a scenario where we come back for a game in Fairfax or see us in St Louis or Dayton. I mean, I’m just a “fan”.

Wow, what a sh*tshow. Sorry to hear, Gunnie.

The only thing I can think of is that swimmom won a silent auction, which allowed her to tweet from that account for a week.
