We will have 1 star recruits that play like 5 star. Or we will have 5 star recruits with some issues of cash payments, but nothing to bad. Thanks for the opportunity. You won't be let down. Might get sanctioned, but it will be worth it.

GIVING DAY 2023
OK, based on recent discussions here, I am formulating a plan for a revised AD and basketball program.

Please note that this is a work in progress, so if I have left you out, my apologies.

Here is what it looks like so far:

Athletic Director: Witch Doctor

Men's Basketball Coaching Staff: MasonhHoops.com members

We will all participate in all aspects, but, leadership for focus areas:
Recruiting: Jollay, Jim, GSII
Practice/In Game Coaching: SleeperPick, Gemini, mkaufman, Jollay
Team entertainment: PiKapp, Jollay-Note, you are limited to LEGAL activites, but grey areas are encouraged. All decisions need to be approved by at least one other member of the MasonHoops to ensure our program won't get the death penalty.
Head Coach: Obviously Jollay is head coach of both Men's and Women's basketball (he will be supervised at all times when interacting with the women's team).

AD Responsibilities:
SID
: mhAdmin, Pablo, Petey, ByGeorge (minus Bryan since he is evidently off his rocker based on his recent twitter rant ;-) )
Game Releases and Program History: PatriotsSince81 with assist from Pablo
Patriot Club/Fundraising: Tom, The Great Patsby
Fan Outreach: DJ3, PMP (this is a punitive assignment)
Marketing and Special Committee on Eliminating Sports: Five Two
Spirit and Traditions: Jack Strop
Apparel and Branding: Gunnie, tblack
Compliance/Fact Checking/Skepticism: Quentin Daniels
Cheerleader/Masonnette Recruitment: Pheonix-Arizona
Managing Hate: Old Man
Alumni Social Media Relations: PatriotFan4Life
Future Coaching Searches: Herndon

Late game candidate for post of the year.

GIVING DAY 2023
I found this 2015 Washington post article interesting. Nothing’s changed in the past 5 years. I know it won’t happen durning a pandemic, but its time to clear house and start over.

“Before Butler, Wichita State and Virginia Commonwealth, there was a giant-killer called George Mason. But while the others have maintained a national presence, the Patriots have fallen back into the cluttered well of dreamers.”

“We have work to do, a lot of work to do,” said Brad Edwards, the former Washington Redskins defensive back in his first academic year as George Mason’s athletic director after two years at Jacksonville University. “We need to catch up on many things.”

Guess you were sleeping when the AD announced the practice facility and locker room upgrades?

Considering where Mason was, they have certainly improved on the facility front. It might not be top top of the line, but they certainly have something.

On the court however, there's been some improvement over the years, but nothing that has taken the men's program to the NCAA or NIT. That to me is the biggest (dead horse) problem.

Modest upgrade to facilities should be expected. I cant give Edwards credit for tackling the low hanging fruit.

He clearly hired the wrong guy. Mason hasn't even sniffled the NCAA bubble.
Fundraising has been abysmal.
Attendance is a joke.

You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I just hope that anything you mentioned you help/have helped to be part of the solution. :)

To be fair, our two highest ever single-year donation periods were during Brad Edwards (2014 and 2017). Let's keep in mind that we raised a grand total of $760,000 the year after our final four run, barely cracked a million after the 2011 run. Targeted donation asks for things like the scoreboard, the practice facility, etc. are a change from the past.

Guys on here act like we had the fanbases of vcu (top 100 D1 attendance the year we went to the final four) or Wichita State (they averaged 10,000+ fans per game even before their Final Four) or the history of Butler ever.

Interestingly, both D-1 basketball coaches hired by Brad Edwards are still at their respective schools - https://bustingbrackets.com/2020/10...l-357-d-i-head-coaches-for-2020-21-season/13/:

"263. Tony Jasick (Jacksonville) (Last year: 253)
  • Overall record: 136-157
Jasick enters year seven with the Dolphins, following a three stint as head coach at IPFW. He’s responsible for a single CIT bid with both schools but has yet to really contend for an Atlantic Sun title with Jacksonville. There’s still time to turn things around, but Jacksonville hasn’t exactly been a prime contender since Jasick’s arrival."

"146. Dave Paulsen (George Mason) (Last year: 145)
  • Overall record: 216-176
Paulsen is a talented head coach who’s already on his fifth gig, leading Williams to a D3 title before winding up at Bucknell. Two NCAA Tournaments later, he took the George Mason job in 2015 and is in the midst of a grueling task to turn things around. His Patriots have been winning games but were just 12th place in the A-10 this past season, leaving plenty of work left for Paulsen and his staff in the tough mid-major league."

Yeah I certainly have been interested in what Jasick is doing considering he was also a Brad hire. It doesn't look like he's worked out too well, although I suspect the expectations might be different. His time might be coming to a close.

In addition to the basketball coach's performance, I've wondered about the Athletic Department for some time.

I just get the sense me and three college buddies could drum up more interest in basketball at Mason than the current regime. Cool promos...any tradition...pregame parties, whatever.

Around 3-4 years ago I just had a "why am I here" moment on the concourse when I couldn't get some stupid promo for my son despite having season tickets/being a donor. So I stopped prioritizing going to games.

I run a website that gets hundreds of thousands of hits covering local HS basketball. I've had requests to expand my website to Richmond. I've been going to Mason games for 30 years.

You would think I would be a natural partner with Mason, but when I talked about such things I was told to just go through Learfield. That doesn't seem smart, and I still don't understand why we don't have some big government contractors sponsoring the program.

There are so many small things that must be done to up Mason's coolness factor. For instance, VHSL plays its public school championship games at Siegel.

Not saying we can/do that here, but how do we drum up local interest in Mason? State interest? There are ways to do it, I'm just not sure the university/AD has any kind of coherent strategy to do it.

Why would Boeing or some big federal contractor not pay to have Mason seniors up at halftime, new hires to their company from Mason's Cyber Security Program?

That shows all the dads of young kids at the games...maybe, you know, Mason is a good place to go?

I am sure there are only like 100,000 alum around here that work for federal contractors though I doubt that's a realistic goal.

The AD needs to get out of the way at this point. Their involvement with rebranding the Patriot Platoon was pretty pathetic. The restrictions they throw onto tailgating are ridiculous. Even shutting down fan made cheer sheets, like wtf level of ridiculous.
I think that’s what’s the most painful to see at this point, is these are self imposed restrictions. They are adding their own red tape to prevent things from happening. Really thought a changing of the guards would have changed this line of thinking but I guess not.
