Mason has alot of land down Braddock road and Shirley gate i think.

They do, pretty sure that entire wooded area on the right side of Braddock from the private school to Shirley gate is owned by Mason. Not sure what they would ever use that for, it's probably too far outside of walkng distance to ever put any real academic buildings down there. Might be big enough if they ever decided to retire the Pat Dome and rebuild a new arena.

Fun fact- there used to be a somewhat large (for Fairfax at least) homeless population back there. ROTC used to occasionally go over there to do training lanes in those woods, we'd stumble on their mini tent cities. Great training to teach kids to look for IEDs while moving on foot because you had to be aware of possible human turds on the ground.

With all the P5 football schools going to conference-only play, many G5 and FCS schools will not be getting payday games. Many non-P5 budgets will be bleeding red. Glad Mason didn't go down the football path

I agree, although I doubt that ODU regrets its decision - https://www.wtkr.com/sports/odu-football-to-face-gamecocks-in-2024-at-south-carolina:

"NORFOLK, Va. (ODUSports.com) - The Old Dominion University and University of South Carolina football programs will meet for the first time ever on Aug. 31, 2024, ODU Senior Associate Athletic Director Bruce Stewart confirmed Friday.

A member of the Southeastern Conference, generally ranked as the nation's best football conference, South Carolina will pay ODU a $1.5 million guarantee to play in Columbia's Williams-Brice Stadium. It will be the largest payout ODU has ever received.

ODU received $1.32 million for playing at Liberty in 2018.

The game strengthens an already attractive 2024 schedule for the Monarchs, who host Virginia Tech and East Carolina. A fourth non-conference game likely will be played at home against a Football Championship Subdivision team.

ODU began playing football in 2009 and quickly became the best startup program in FCS history. The Monarchs finished in the FCS Top Ten in 2011 and 2012 before making the transition to FBS over the next two seasons.

The Monarchs went to their first bowl game in 2016, beating Eastern Michigan in the Bahamas Bowl, and finished 10-3.

ODU recently hired former Penn State offensive coordinator Ricky Rahne as head coach. Rahne has the nation's youngest FBS coaching staff and recently had ODU's best recruiting class ever, according to the 247Sports recruiting Web site."

ODU has been horrible at football. One victory over VaTech does not mean it was worth the millions they have sunk into the program. They will be stuck in the dreadful CUSA forever.

1.3 million from Liberty. Wow. Feels like they should get 3 million from a SEC school.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, and I'm sure I am. But it appears that many of Mason's basketball fans believe a football team would hurt the product on the basketball court.

But ODU's basketball team seems to be just fine. They went to the NCAA tournament three times since establishing a football team. (2009-10, 2010-11, 2018-19) plus a NIT semifinals in 2015.

And their football isn't as bad as your making them out to be. Since going to FBS football in 2013 they have a .486 winning percentage. It's not great, but considering they collect fat checks from p5 schools to get beat up it's not bad. Overall they have a .579 winning percentage (FCS-FBS combined).

To put in perspective, Paulsen has a .433 winning percentage in league play. I know, he has an overall .500 record at Mason, but he plays teams like Longwood to get those few extra wins.

Better than politics!

It is politics, just a different branch...

Anyway, it’s 2020, non-P5 football sucks. FCS sucks. We would have no conference to join and would have to be an independent (see: UMass). We have no stadium and would either have to build one (good luck with that in Fairfax) or rent one (RFK decrepit, FedEx in Maryland and too big). And what would the prize be for all the startup costs? A massively bloated budget and being locked out of the BCS.

1998 was the time to jump in (the last time Mason was semi-serious about it). My stance at this point is focus on competing in the A10 and creating a culture of basketball at Mason.

Not at all advocating for Mason to have football, but FCS football does not suck.

I much prefer FCS football over G5 football. At least with FCS, there is a chance for an NC. But is it worth the expense? Nope.

And I wouldn't want Mason to play FCS. For the most part, those are not our peer institutions. If you look at the teams, it is privates or small publics plus JMU, Stony Brook, and maybe a handful of other large state universities.

Unfortunately you’re right. Mason missed their opportunity.

Mason is still essentially a commuter school 30 years after I graduated. Unless we establish a winning program right out of the gate, it will take years for football to even register to most students. We lost that opportunity with basketball and look where we are now.
