"Report: South Carolina BOT members meet with former football player to 'eventually' replace Ray Tanner
SDS Staff | 8 days ago

Certain University of South Carolina Board of Trustees members met with former Gamecocks standout and current George Mason athletic director Brad Edwards recently, according to ABC Columbia’s Mike Gillespie.

The purpose of the meeting was to gauge Edwards’ interest in taking over for Ray Tanner “eventually.”

'Brad was brought in because of uncertainty about Ray Tanner’s future at USC,' according to the report, which cited a source. The report also said that the board would likely want to groom Edwards to replace Tanner at an unknown time.

Edwards played at South Carolina in the 1980s and was named an All-American. He went on to play defensive back in the NFL for nine seasons. Edwards is the current Athletic Director at George Mason. Prior to that, he held the same position at Jacksonville University. Before his last two stops, Edwards held the role of senior associate athletics director and chief financial officer at South Carolina. The report stated that he would "absolutely be interested” in returning to the Gamecocks.

Under Tanner’s watch, South Carolina’s athletics department is overall healthy, both on the field of play and the financial aspect. Of course, Will Muschamp’s future is very much up in the air, although it’s likely he returns in 2020."

GIVING DAY 2023
I could see a realistic scenario where Paulsen wins this year, Edwards goes to USC, and Paulsen goes to Georgia Tech to clean up the mess down there and work for Cabrera after they fire Josh Pastner.

We will potentially need to replace President, AD, and Coach in next year.
The president doesn’t select the basketball coach.

Unless Tanner's departure is imminent, it puts Brad in an awkward position. Hard to be an AD-in-waiting at one school without being a lame duck in your current school. What big donor (assuming that one is forthcoming) will find the AD's pitch for funding convincing if the AD has one foot out the door?

It was me, and I stand beside my comment.

If ACC teams with deep pockets love anything, it's a coach who's going to take six years minimum to rebuild their program.

I like Brad and Dave but we could all stand to be a little more realistic about their resumes. Brad doesn't seem like a slam dunk for SC - probably not in the conversation if he's not an alum. Guessing that's why the news is about being "groomed" for the role rather than a traditional pushout of the current guy. Boosters are also insane, so Brad might be an unwilling patsy in some sort of internal power struggle. Of course if he's offered he's 100% gone, but something about being AD in waiting seems off.

Dave would be a sexy hire for exactly zero P5 schools. In the right situation I could see a school taking him, like if they're traditionally bottom-barrel P5 and in trouble with the NCAA, and they want a steady hand to stabilize the program. Outside of that, I ain't exactly worried about losing him this offseason.

Again, Georgia Tech is under probation and having a postseason ban this year, their current less-than-sexy Coach Pastner is about to get fired this year.

I could see Cabrera hiring Paulsen to clean up that program.

If you think about it...Pastner, Gregory, Hewitt, Cremins..its not like Georgia Tech gets the greatest coaches either...Gregory hardly won a ton at Dayton, and same with Pastner at Memphis. Paulsen already cleaned up a mess at Mason too...

The only way Paulsen even potentially leaves after this season is if he makes the Sweet 16. And I don't think there's anyone here who thinks this team is a Sweet 16 team (or even a tournament team).

I think Edwards has done a good job, considering the state of the athletics department and the university's philosophy and the lack of community support and infrastructure. But I also agree, the scheme outlined in the last linked article seems really shady and off and I wouldn't want any part of it if I were him.

Personally I’m rooting for Dave to go to GT. They gave us an aggressive deadly virus, the least we could do is give them diabetes.

ConnectedCock said... (original post) I didn’t say that. Brad Edwards is the favorite at this point. Long way to go.

Brad Edwards, while a Gamecock great....if chosen would show that our "out of touch" BOT are committed to keeping the good ole boy system in place and not committed to real athletic excellence. That should be the most frightening point.

I disagree with this take. I think there are certain P5 schools where Dave would be a good fit -- namely high academic schools where the basketball program is underperforming.

For example, DP would be a good fit at Boston College. I also think he would be a good fit at Wake Forest (the current Wake Forest football coach is a Williams alum who coached at Bowling Green and Richmond). He would also be a good fit at Penn St. given his success at Bucknell (although it appears that Chambers may have turned the corner in Happy Valley). I also think he would be a good fit at Northwestern, although Collins is not going anywhere unless he takes over at Duke when Coach K. retires. Vanderbilt would have been a good fit but they just hired Stackhouse.

LOL. There are people on these boards having legitimate discussions about Paulsen's ability to coach and recruit at the A-10 level, but some of you think that he could do it at the P5 level?? Even the worst P5 schools have donors that care about results. This discussion is laughable, Dave has no shot of leaving us for a P-5 until he at least gets us to the dance.

DP's winning percentage has dropped with every move up. No chance he leaves, although part of me wishes he would. .762 at Williams. .588 at Bucknell. .507 at Mason.

As a Penn State alum, I appreciate the Bucknell men's basketball program. But, I don't understand why Coach Paulsen's success at Bucknell would necessarily translate to a good fit at Penn State.

Trivia question: Name the former Mason assistant who was the head coach at Penn State?
