"I love the passion of both sides of this issue. The AD needs to be proactive in explaining how the planned renovations to certain other parts of the RAC will sufficiently accommodate the students' needs, given the loss of access to the Cage Gym."

I love 50% of your posts, and hate the other 50. So conflicted. It's like I'm in an emotionally abusive relationship and you're gaslighting me.

You could but would it be a good use of his time? 400 people have signed. I guarantee that if I walked around Mason I could get 400 people to support repealing the 19th amendment. The funds are there and it's happening. These kids are fighting a battle that was lost before they even knew they wanted to fight it.

I think reaching out to those (misinformed) people in the Mason community who oppose one of your initiatives is a good thing, especially when the explanations are quite compelling. Educating the community is what the institution is about. Promotes organizational identification; helps recruit future fans; etc. Granted, if they have to choose between spending an hour or less with these people vs wooing a big time donor, there's more return on investment on the latter.

If you are not aware, Mason Athletics is taking away our practice space to renovate it for a d1 basketball only gym. Please sign this in support of us and other club sports!

Mason Students: Save the Cage Gym!
The Cage Gym will be taken away for a new "basketball" facility only open to those on the D1 team. While it is not being used, the facility will remain locked and unusable by students. The teams only practice for about 3 hours a day…

"I am a member of the badminton club and we use this gym for our practices. Keeping a booking is already hard enough, with us having to give up practice time for other events. If the cage gym was to be taken away, it will no doubt be so much harder to keep having our practices on a consistent basis. Furthermore, the cage gym is constantly in use by both clubs and students for recreation activities and if GMU is truly concerned about moving on from the commuter school image, they should seriously consider not taking away one of the reasons for students to stick around on campus."

Keeping the badminton club happy is the key to getting rid of the commuter school image you guys. I'll wait for their tournament to come up and give the winners 500 plus million dollars in free advertising.:bricks:

"Students should be able to access the place where all can play together have fun learn make friends. As an alumni I feel bad that new students can not be able to experience cage gym"
Has the world gone f**king mad? Why do all of these assholes make the Cage Gym out to be the cultural hub of the school? You'd think they were taking away the JC and just putting up a giant banner that says "f**k all of you" in it's place with the way these kids are acting. It's a shitty gym with a rubber floor that's barely an afterthought to 99% of the student population. I was on club soccer and we used it for indoor practice. I can safely say I used that gym more than 99.99% of the student body and even I think it's pretty useless and should be given to basketball ASAP.

While I'm in agreement that the Cage Gym should be used as a dedicated facility for the basketball team, it's easy for me to say that. I've been a season ticket holder as long as they've been selling them and seeing the team regaining respectability, I'm all for helping the program along. Also, although I use the RAC several times a week, I have never set foot in the Cage gym. So it's no loss to me personally.

On the other hand, apparently some people actually do use it and, until it's made clear to them how their access to appropriate facilities will be handled in the future, they're going to complain about it. To their eyes, they are losing a valued benefit. So the world hasn't gone mad....I'd like to think that laying out the plan would reassure them that they will still have somewhere they can work out/practice, etc.

It just feels like this is a simple sign on the wall outside the cage saying something to the effect of "here's how we'll be making up the space." Maybe email blast the same memo out to students. I agree the AD or Mason Rec should draw up something short to explain it but I can promise the same group whining about this will whine when they're told they have to make the extra three minute walk to the field house instead.

I think the OP has already said that. There are other places hey can go, but they would be "inconvenienced."

Recently, a very reliable source told me that there was a plan in place in the late 90s to cut Mason sports down to the minimum DI-AAA (non football playing schools) 16 sports. There was a lot of support to do it and then a small contingent raised concerns to TOC and he backed away from the plan. The majority of staff (coaches, administrators, etc) were not happy with TOC for "caving in" (my source's words) as they realized Mason's best chance to succeed was to get to the NCAA minimum # of sports. Instead, TOC ended up adding sports.
If you are a long-time reader of these boards, you know I've been saying we need to get to the minimum for years. I don't have a ton of facts to back this story up but this is a message board so if I can't post rumors here, where can I?????
U of Buffalo is cutting 4 sports: https://www.washingtonpost.com/spor...a99da559f9e_story.html?utm_term=.cd415b3cbf85

GIVING DAY 2023

The school will honor all scholarships of the 120 athletes affected. Buffalo will allow those athletes to contact other schools and will grant their release if they decide to transfer.

Every bench warmers dream. Keep their scholarship and no more practices!

i didn't graduate THAT long ago and i have no idea what the cage gym is...

And i feel there is still a lot of other gym space for people to use...they probably just don't want to cross the street.

Some of the sports Buffalo is cutting I dont see Mason cutting. Baseball, no. Soccer, no. Swimming, no.

Question for us is what do we cut that would equal 2 Million? Or atleast a Million.

Not trying to be a dick but has Darryl Greene done anything for Mason yet. I'm sure he gets a nice six figure salary.
