It’s been done before… and can be done again led by someone who’s done it. The Final Four year was a crucial win at the Seigel Center. We were down 12 at half, had a huge 2nd half and won by 12. We were a bubble watch team then. Our record was 17-5 with an RPI of 31. vcu was 15-6 with an RPI of 63. I was there. Never seen that place so quiet before.

"Richmond, Va. - Entering Thursday night's game at virginia commonwealth, there was not a single player on the George Mason men's basketball team that knew what it was like to earn a win at Alltel Pavilion in Richmond, Va. With 15:22 to play, it didn't look like that would be changing, as Mason found itself down 17 to a team that had made two-thirds of its shots.
But then something strange happened. The Patriots seemed to suddenly remember that they have the nation's fifth-best field-goal percentage defense. And with a renewed defensive confidence carrying over to the offensive end, Mason went on an epic run to not only silence the crowd, but also to make a statement. There's a reason the Patriots are alone in first place in the CAA and that heart and hunger were on display for all to see.
Mason (18-5, 12-2) closed the game with a 41-12 run to hand vcu its first home loss of the season, 73-61. The Rams (15-7, 9-5) managed to convert on just 5 of their final 23 shot attempts while the Patriots made 17 of 23 in the second half. Jai Leis finished with 21 points and eight rebounds while
Folarin Campbell had 18 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Will Thomas added 14 points and eight rebounds. It was Mason's first win at vcu since Jan. 22, 2000 and just its fourth all time in 17 games at vcu.
Mason's big run began with strong work from the starting sophomores. Campbell made a 3-pointer and a layup and Thomas had a pair of layups to make it 49-41. Butler followed with his only points of the night, a jumper to make it 49-43. Lewis scored inside to make it 49-45 before Eric Davis' free throw made it a five-point lead. Lewis made a pair of free throws and Thomas had a dunk to pull Mason to within one.
Nick George made vcu's first field goal after a seven minute drought but
Gabe Norwood's layup closed the gap, Will Thomas' layup gave Mason the lead and Skinn's 3-pointer gave Mason a cushion that would slowly grow to double figures. After trailing by 17, Mason was able to take a 13-point lead, a 30-point swing that dropped vcu into a tie for fifth place in the CAA.
The Rams still did much better shooting on the night than Mason's typical opponent as vcu made 47.2 percent of its shots, about 10 percent better than the typical opponent. But the Rams committed four more turnovers and four more rebounds. Another telling stat was the free throw line, where Mason was 15 of 16 while vcu was 2 of 4.
Both teams started slow as the score was just 2-2 after three minutes. But that's when vcu heated up. B.A. Walker, Alexander Harper and Nick George combined for four 3-pointers as the Rams built an eight-point lead. Mason was able to pull to within three at 18-15 before a 12-4 run gave vcu a double-digit lead. The Rams got a layup off a full-court inbound pass as time expired in the first half to take a 36-24 lead at the break.
Mason allowed vcu to make more than 65 percent of its shots in the first half while shooting just .357 from the field. Five offensive rebounds and six vcu turnovers allowed Mason to stay within a dozen."
