Pretty sure we didn't land JF by saying maybe you'll get some minutes off the bench as a freshman

3 players battle it out for two spots. Always a good thing. It’s possible Cooper is the one who eventually steps back as the 6 man. Who knows how it will shake out.

Also Bailey is versatile so it’s conceivable he could play 1-3 depending on matchups, game situations and player availability. Figuring out how all the pieces fit together best will be a challenge but a far nicer one than having no bench at all.

I don’t see him as a 1, at least not in a traditional distributor, primary ball-handler role. It’s possible he played some of that in Oregon, but I never saw him do that at UT where he’s been the last 3 years including a transfer year. But maybe as a scorer who brings it up the court, similar to what Folarin & Cam did. Depends on who else comes in.

I do see him directly competing w/Coop & Fernandez for minutes and wouldn’t be the least bit shocked if he starts.

We saw what happened when Cooper had to start at the 1, so I'd be surprised if we saw a lineup that included Bailey, Cooper, and Fernandez all at the same time ever, but maybe English can make it work.

Honestly think the goal should be for Cooper to not play more than 28 mpg and Bailey to be in the 30-32 mpg territory. That would leave plenty of minutes for Fernandez to get (somewhere between 20-22 mpg if he earns them).

On the 3/4 front, I'd love an Antwan Walker type to just take over the stretch-4, but what about a Marcus Weathers type (an bit undersized small forward, but is a bully in the paint and can bang with the big guys for rebounds)?

Honestly, Devin Dinkins was rated similarly to both Freeman and Gilyard when they were recruited, so even if he's not starter ready as a freshman, we should at least have an expectation he's going to be competent enough not to have a SG playing out of position in desperation.

PG Keeshawn Barthélémy just entered. A PG from Colorado. He will be a redshirt junior next year - spent two years with Nate. Averaged 11.1 points per game last year.

Time for Nate to earn that paycheck

Three years of eligibility left.
Averaged about 26 Min per game.
Started 28 of 33 games last season.
Double-digit scorer who knocked down 35% of his 3's on 124 attempts. 83% of his FTs on 92 attempts.
2.4 assists to 1.3 turnovers.
Only 1.1 personal fouls per game and has never fouled out of a game.
Decent height at 6'2".
From Montreal, so geography not really an issue if he's been playing in Colorado.

Only real knocks seems to be he doesn't rebound for sh!t (2.4 RPG) but who cares w/Josh and Ticket pulling them down. And that his scoring disappeared in some big games (2 - UCLA, 4, Tennessee, 2 -Arizona, 9 - USC, 6- UCLA) in the first half of the season, but still ended the season w/15, 12, & 15 against Arizona twice and St. Bonnie in the NIT in his final 5 games.

Ummmmm.....yeah. Go get him, Nate.

3 yrs eligibility...may need to go to a 2 pg lineup to get Dinkins his minutes as a soph and junior, especioally.

Agreed. If this guy is good enough and “veteran” enough to make the difference, than I’d gladly take him with Dinkins. I know the ideal situation is having a 4th or 5th year guy, but something like this could definitely work.

Listening to the Coaches show last night I wouldn’t be surprised if we eventually see Henry enter the portal after we have a couple more transfers commit. He didn’t say anything in particular, just seemed to have more direction/expectations with the other players.

From what I’ve been told Malik loves Mason and doesn’t want to leave, but I suppose if it becomes clear there is no realistic path to even regular minutes off the bench, he’s probably not gonna stay. He’s got enough raw ability to contribute somewhere.

The two questions I would have:

1) Why is Keeshawn looking to transfer? He's getting plenty of minutes. My guess would be to play at a bigger name school - if so, we got little to no shot. Just curious since playing minutes or a move up in competition are normally the two reasons to transfer.

2) Would they recruit a kid to play over Devin for extended years? Having a senior grad transfer is one thing, but a younger guy like Keeshawn could be here for a couple years. I know Paulsen was against that sort of thing, but I don't see English being a stickler on that... my read is he wants the best talent he can get and the best players will play.

I don’t keep tabs on Colorado’s recruiting, but it’s at least possible their staff wants to go in a different direction at PG and Keeshawn entering the portal was a mutual decision.

I guess I have two thoughts on that.

1. Minutes aren't guaranteed. If Jabari Smith, Paolo Banchero, and Chet Holmgren all suddenly decide they want to play another year in college and do it at George Mason - Take 'em All. Even if that means Josh doesn't see the court again until Senior night. Recruit the best players you can at every position and let them compete for the minutes.

2. I've got Zero issues w/two guys capable of handling the ball being on the court together. I watched a lot of UT games this year and having Vescovi and Chandler together was a good thing. As was Vescovi, Chandler and Zeigler, all three of whom have started at the 1 for Tennessee.
