Hard to believe Singleton came in for one season to be something other than the starting PG. KE clearly stated Singleton is a point guard so I would be very surprised if he isn't the starter.

I originally was thinking the same thing, but maybe Dinkins (and Polite?) are just playing better. Kim has also been very clear he never promises starting spots or playing time to anyone … the best guys play and that’s how it should be.

Agreed that all 3 will play, but if Dinkins is the Game 1 starter I disagree that (barring injury) there’s a good chance he’s not starting come March. If the staff already trusts Dinkins enough to give him the keys of such a veteran team, can’t see why he wouldn’t improve significantly as he gains experience and the game starts slowing down.
Like when Tyronne Tiggs started over Tremaine Price to start the year?

Your scenario is certainly a possibility, as is mine (not a prediction on my part, thus the use of "chance")

Edit - Tiggs did not start game 1, Price (then a Junior) did, I remember Tiggs starting at home, so maybe it was game 3 that year but can't find box score. Tiggs started 1 game and transferred next year to ORU.

This info is coming because people know who was running "first team" the first practice after Madness.

Then you have three weeks of practice before Auburn, so...things can change based on any number of factors.

Really not too much to unpack here. A coach's initial thoughts first practice might very well differ from his thoughts pre-first game. But, the initial cards are on the table.

I like it.

In this age of "positionless" basketball, are we making too much of this PG discussion? Sure, there will be a starter - but I think most of us agree that there will be many playing the role, including Ticket and VBJ at times. It would be great to have a clear cut PG, but it's the combined effect of all guards that will tell us if we'll have a more successful season.

Ticket loses a ton of his best qualities if he were to run point, Coop very clearly was not comfortable nor good at it and from what we have all heard VBJ is not a “pg” so no I don’t think anyone is making too much of the discussion. Great teams almost always have an above avg PG.

Just think of Coop starting at the 1 against ODU last season and how well that went…

I think if you aren’t going to have a traditional point guard take over sole point guard duties at least 3 of the 5 players on the court have to be comfortable with the ball in their hands and also be able to make sure the offense doesn’t stagnate (meaning they don’t just pound the ball into the floor or take every half chance they see or turn it over constantly). See: 2011 with Hancock, Long, Cornelius

I remember timing Kolek and Hartwell when those two appeared to be the options at pg. LOL. Scary huh? To Kolek's credit he would pass and initiate the offense within 3 to 5 seconds. Hartwell on the other hand would dribble for 10 to 15 seconds before making the first pass. Whoever plays the point need to be prepared to pass the ball and get things going asap.

I've got that individual on mute and the my better judgement is telling me to go with that, but I have to know what spurred that response.
If you're talking about me, it was nothing nefarious. Just an observation. No big deal. And I realize Dinkins is not 5 star.
Still, you never know. He could surprise!

Recognizing that "positionless" basketball is totally different than playing without a point guard, I tend to agree that we may be making too much of the PG situation.

The offense is still going to revolve around getting the ball in to Josh. You don't really need a great point guard to do that. But it would help to have 4 good shooters that can keep help defense away from him or punish when the double teams come.

We played better last season when we moved the ball and didn't have to solely rely on Josh with his back to the basket. But that fizzled out by conference play. I expect to see more of the same this year. Hopefully, whoever is at the 1 will be more of a shooting threat and we can play solid on the defensive end.

Then when Josh is out of the game, I hope we put the track team in and just try and get as much in transition as possible and play with high ball pressure. I think that will be the strength of the "2nd team".
