GIVING DAY 2023
Random hypothetical I found myself thinking of when I was driving home from work tonight:

15 seconds left in the second half, we have possession following a dead ball, down 1, who do you want taking the shot? What about down 2? Down 3?

Down 1 or 2? Greene or Miller going to the basket. Down 3? Kolek.

I don't disagree. Would be a bit worried that Miller would be too passive for a final possession, but at the same time would be worried that Greene would put his head down and draw an offensive foul. Tough call to make.

Miller (1,2) or Kolek (3) fine for any or maybe I'd draw up a pick and pop for Oduro or him as a trailer for a surprise two.

Calixte possibly just for shits and giggles.

It's wild to think that a true freshman is honestly our best offensive option for a final possession no matter the situation. Again, don't disagree.

I shutter at the thought of what these boards would do, myself included, if Calixte was on the floor, let alone took a potential game winning shot.

I can picture it now, entry pass bounces off his hands, he trips, grabs the ball, and stands up to dunk it, then gets called for the travel.

People would be slinging their shit at the walls like we were in a f**king zoo. The servers would crash under the stress.

Herndon would get on a day later and tell us that if we spent more money Calixte wouldn’t need to take the final shot.

Actually reminds me of that one time under Hewitt we were in that situation and Copes was on the floor and he gets the pass and actually buries the 8 footer to win the game, the most unlikely player on the floor hitting that shot in that moment. I wish I could remember who we were playing.

And I think he tried to go to that well in the very next game and it went terribly terribly badly.

I know the exact game you are talking about and can’t remember who we were playing for the life of me. Want to say it was in the nonconference for some reason but can’t remember.

"Second-Half Rally Carries Men's Basketball Past William & Mary, 60-58
2/23/2013 7:04:00 PM

George Mason Athletics

FAIRFAX, Va. - Sophomore Erik Copes hit a 13-foot jumper with 0.5 seconds remaining, capping a George Mason second-half rally as the men's basketball team defeated William & Mary, 60-58, on Saturday afternoon at the Patriot Center. The win moves the Patriots' record to 10-6 in Colonial Athletic Association play and 17-11 overall, while the Tribe dropped to 12-15 (6-10 CAA)."

Speaking of game-winning shots, how about this one -

I’m gonna attach this video and @Petey Buckets post to whatever letter I write to Brad regarding our coaching situation.

Petey perfectly highlighted what ails our program and this 4-minute video shows what it once was — even with dog crap Hewitt as coach, Larranaga’s players were good enough to stand toe-to-toe with a loaded vcu team that would beat our current squad by 50. What a ridiculous game that was.

We’re never gonna get back to that point under the current coach. It’s just like night and day.

What are the major differences in the players Coach L recruited vs DP? I too have noticed a difference even going back to watch games from mid 2000's. Curious if anyone see it too.

Toughness, physicality and playing with an edge ... even when L’s teams couldn’t shoot it very well they would battle and make it into a rock fight. Our program has gotten soft.

Not that they were fighting every game, but there were also plenty of games if there was a hard foul someone would run up and get in someones face. Like the guy who sprinted down the floor to shove AJ in the Norfolk State game would have been decked by Pearson and or Morrison.

We have no dogs. A bunch of school children. Gotta have 1-2 dogs per team to help in situations

Speaking of Jalen Jenkins, how about his game-winning shot -

I was already on the Fairfax County Parkway before I realized we won that game. We left a minute early to beat traffic thinking we had no chance in hell, and I decided to check the boards to read about the meltdown after the loss. I turned to my wife and said, "People are saying we won the game. How is that even possible?" I haven't left a close game early since that night.

I shudder at what would’ve happened after Sanders shoved Hancock in 2010. They all probably would’ve melted down.

Marquise and Otis were the closest things we had, but Marquise wasn't around long enough and Otis had a disappointing senior season. All of the other top 8 teams in the conference have at least one player that's a next level player who can just take over and we don't have a single one who can.

That team had Allen, Pearson, and Sherrod...all three of those players would be the best player on our current team (I would also take Mike Moe, Arledge, and even Johnny Williams in a second off that team and insert any of them right into the starting lineup).
