Omg people need to stop acting like stars don't matter. I posted numerous articles on these boards that show the science behind rankings. Generally speaking players with higher rankings produce more on the court!

Science? Just stop. ESPN lowers star rankings based on what school the kid commits to. Sure, has more weight on the nation's top 200 prospects and we aren't going after those kids

You are looking at a few antidotes. Many people have done the research and studied the progress of recruits based on their rankings. It has been proven multiple times, players with higher rankings produce more on the court. Here are two articles detailing different studies that show higher ranking players tend to perform better. Obviously you need to do more then just recruit to be a successful coach, but to act like rankings don't matter is ignorant.

remember when Erik Dopes was a Top-60 recruit? Kid didn't even finish his playing career at Mason. Yet we paid his Uncle Roland Houston 4 years salary at $100k/year+ for landing him.

Percentage of Time Became Efficient Starter
Unranked Freshmen; VerbalCommits.com average star rating higher than 3- 11%
Unranked Freshmen; VerbalCommits.com average star rating 3- 7%
Unranked Freshmen; VerbalCommits.com average star rating between 2-3- 5%
Unranked Freshmen; VerbalCommits.com average star rating 2- 2.%

Basically don't expect freshman to be a be an efficient starter, that's obvious. But you can see the higher the ranking the higher likely hood they are an efficient starter.

Remember when he was coached by a horrible coach, remember when that was one antidote and not the norm?

Ryan Kish just Tweeted we are interested in 6'0" Bryce Douglas of Centreville making it official--if you have a Northern Virginia address, Dave Paulsen is interested.

In fairness boosting attendance and spurring local interest may be the only way this program survives now that we're spending like drunken Spaniards.

Bigger bust, Okoloji or Copes?

Call me crazy, but I think Paulsen is getting a little too cocky! He wont be able to develop every undersized PG.

I hope I'm wrong, but we need to go after higher caliber players

Remind me again why I should trust the evaluation of some guy with questionable credentials, who sees most kids play in person 1-2 times (at best), over a staff of highly compensated coaches whose livelihoods depend on recruiting quality players?

Oh that's right, I shouldn't. And I don't. At all.

I feel like I bring a fairly objectionable opinion to the boards and I just get attacked. I don't care if you trust me lol.
But I do need to point out your rational is flawed. just because your livihood depends on how well you do something, does not mean you do a good job. Just look at every coach who gets fired every year.

I also want to point out recruiting rankings rely on the evaluations of professional scouts "whos livihood" depends on their evaluation. Scouts travel the country and evaluate thousands of players every year.

So its not my opinion Vs Paulsen's opinion. And its not like Paulsen isn't going after high level recruits, he just hasn't landed the big names. According to ESPN Paulsen did offer 3 players with a 4 star recruits in the 2016 and 2017 respected recruiting classes. One more 4 star recruit who chose Stanford in the 2018 class. That is just from ESPN who does a poor job of reporting anything not ACC basketball.

Sorry I'm just sick of this notion that we should throw away the star system. It has been proven to be an accurate tool for predicting a players performance level.

Please tell me you are joking.

First, I don't think you meant to suggest you bring an "objectionable" opinion to the boards. Objective, perhaps?

Second, I wasn't even talking about you, unless you work as a "scout" for the national recruiting websites. I certainly wasn't attacking you.

Third, it's irrelevant how many other coaches get fired every year. Our current head coach has a track record that says he knows what the hell he is doing. He certainly knows more than some donk who gets paid by the click from some recruiting website. I roll with Dave.

Fourth, this is a dumb argument and my Monday has already royally sucked, so I'm tapping out.

Sorry your right, I cant spell, I did mean objective. hahaha. Sorry to add to a shitty Monday, hope it gets better for you. On the bright side only 11 days until the season!

Marquise Moore is a good example of the type of player that I like - a player that will never be anything more than a 3 star player because of a pretty major flaw in his game (shot), but does other things so well that he can succeed at the A10 level.

We are never going to get 5 star guys, probably not 4 star guys either... but if we can get guys who either (1) have a flaw in their game that the staff feels like they can improve, or (2) do other things so well that they can still succeed at the A10 level without one aspect of their game... I'm ok with it.

I think the staff does a pretty good job figuring out the guys that fit this mold. If they feel like there are enough in this area - great. They haven't shown me anything yet to make me feel like they don't know what they are doing.

Ummm, moving forward, can we only just post positive recruiting related things on here? Keep in mind recruits and opposing teams can read what we post.

While no one has directly criticized a recruit specifically, it doesn't look good when names get mentioned on here and we get responses such as "why can't Dave go for players with more stars or size?" To a recruit, this looks like we don't want them. Us criticizing or judging won't change Dave and Co's decisions. All it will do is potentially make their jobs harder and set our program back.

I'd personally like to see Dave offer more kids like Giannis Antetokounmpo, personally. Kids with good size (6'11") who can also play point guard.

BUT THEY AINT IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA, SON. THEY IS IN THE GREEK ISLES.

16 year olds have no idea what message boards are.

Paul Hewitt would have had 10 offers to guys like that by now

16 year olds have no idea what message boards are.

It's hard to believe that they were like five years old when the first "Embrace the Hate" thread came out.

It's also hard to believe these kids won't ever experience the joy of or receive breaking news from an informative thread like "MIAMI UPDATE."

Nuts. We're a dying breed folks, dying breed. Not like AIDS or Cancer dying, or anything, but slowly dying.
