2019 Recruiting

Except for the fact that we just got a verbal from a kid from NY.....

Well, yes, after the local kids bailed.

Certainly not saying he's discounting other areas of the country, but I have never seen a guys Mason coach recruit this hard locally.

Not saying good or bad. Certainly probably eventually helps from an attendance standpoint.

Paulsen obviously sees these kids may be under recruited and knows he has the ability to coach them up. I think he’s recruiting local but he’s also going to other areas too.

Also keep in mind not everyone who’s recruited is recruited to be a star. Sometimes you need a guy who fills a seat as a role player off the bench.

I trust he knows what he’s doing and is doing what he needs to be done. He at least is recruiting for needs versus just trying to get whomever. Plus a lot can happen as these kids grow and play more.

I’m not in tune with recruiting as much as others but if anyone thinks I’m incorrect please say so, because this is at least how I see it.

I trust Paulsen, but I rather see us go after higher level talent. More often then not a two star recruit will play like a 2 star recruit and not like Otis.

I've been told this in in fact part of Paulsen's strategy, and is also part of the reason Newman and Abrams left (personality conflicts). Paulsen likes to have walkons because they work hard and aren't entitled. Always need guys like that for practice.

I'm all for recruiting locally. I've got to believe there are 15 A10 caliber players in the DMV to Baltimore area. And look at the long-term when we put an offer to a 2-star public HS kid. He is probably a role player (every team needs those) but it could be setting us up to make a run a higher ceiling kids from that school in 2020, 2021, etc.

I think our women's team could benefit from recruiting locally as well. Lots of A10/CAA level girls around that I know we don't even offer.

Like Coach L did at Miami? I kid I kid.

Sometimes we (including myself) act as if we are entitled to high rated kids.
We know that Mason is on the up and up, but 3 or 4 star kids still see that before last year, we were abysmal.

Coach just needs to continue getting the best kids he can for specific needs, start winning consistently and the higher level recruits will come.

But even when they do, Paulsen is not going to go after a kid with the wrong mentality no matter how many stars are next to their name.

And what does a two-star recruit play like?

And what does a two-star recruit play like?

These players are overmatched versus the better players in the nation. Their weaknesses will be exposed against top competition, but have the ability to develop into solid contributors at the non-P5 level, and could be a quality fit for mid major level of play.

Two-star prospect. These players make up the bulk of Division I rosters. They may have little pro potential, are likely to become role players for their respective schools or not enough is known about the prospect to rank them accurately.

Buckley's ceiling is higher than role player.

I have my doubts overall strategy-wise, though. But since I haven't watched AAU I'm going to wait till this HS year to formulate a better opinion. I'll watch some of Paulsen's targets a crap-load then.

Dave doesn't care about stars. He wants guys who will fit the program's culture and mesh with the existing players.

Muscala was a two-star recruit coming out of a Minneapolis suburb. He had a handful of low major offers.

He developed from a skinny 6’10” kid with some skills to a 2nd round NBA draft choice and a rotation player with the Hawks after four years under DP’s tutelage.

Jim’s correct. DP’s recruiting philosophy is built on identifying well-rounded players who fit with the team and the culture. DP and his staff will then coach them up once they are in the program.

So what you are saying is Mar will be in the NBA in a few years?!!!

Nothing against that philosophy, but its my opinion he is going to need to sign more Reuter and Mar types to propell and stay in top half of A10. You can max out a kid coaching wise. But physically, well just compare to a justin tillman. Will AJ be able to stop him? Tillman ate us alive last year. Recruiting matters in this league.

AJ was an ESPN 3 star recruit as well and is probably the most athletic kid on our roster.

I also think Tillman is going to need to shift over to the 5, because vcu doesn't have any more experienced bigs on their roster so he'll be the responsibility of Relvao and Calixte most likely.

You must not have been in Pittsburgh for the A10 tourney. DP coached his a** off and Tillman, as well as Mo Alie-Cox went to the bench early with awful lines.

I believe this coach knows exactly what he is doing in recruiting and in X/O's and time will be a friend to your program.
