2016 Coaching Changes Thread

It was a smart move by vcu and a smarter move by Wade. He has one season in with Shaka's talent and booked a pay raise. He locks in a raise with proving minimal.

I have done that at previous employers and it has always worked out well.

Considering he was making 1M a year and just got it enhanced, even if its just a longer term....quite the move.

I guess we dodged a bullet by not hiring Lavelle Moton. His team sucked this year.

I saw some mention of Mr Elizabeth Turner for the Vandy job. Maybe he will get a payday if he wins the CIT. If he is allowed to take another job.

They should have given Will Wade a 20 year deal at three million a year.

After all, their success in basketball and the money flowing from a top notch institution will be indefinite.

You should renegotiate your contract with a coach who does well every year.

Just like Wade's original contract, the new one isn't even worth the paper on which it is printed.

If he keeps winning and another school comes along with an offer he can't refuse, this extension won't stop him from leaving.

All the risk is with the school in offering such a long contract term. Wade has only been there one season. In the unlikely event he winds up the second coming of Chris Mooney, vcu will be stuck with him and I will probably die laughing.

Look at what happened to Georgia Tech. Their former AD probably thought he was doing the responsible thing by locking up Hewitt after their national runner-up finish, but instead he wound up crippling the basketball budget.

I think you should be willing to renegotiate in order to keep a valued employee, but only within reason. Keep the contract term at 5 years and you make sure that you don't lose any ability to get out of it if things go south.

Good points. I haven't heard what his new buyout is. If it is still only $1M then a P5 school could write a check from the profits on hot dog sales at football games.

Love that thought

Considering Wade had all the leverage with Vandy on the hook -- everyone knows vcu couldn't afford to lose its coaching staff for the second time in less than a year -- I highly doubt his buyout is anything prohibitive.

If another school wants him badly enough, they'll simply offer more than vcu can possibly match. The buyout is a non-issue.

Isn't the buyout the years left on current contract? It seemed Dayton and vcu extended their coaches to make P5 schools pay bigger amounts of cash to get their guy.

The one group I feel sorry for are the JMU fans. They lost both their mens and women coaches and their admin does not seem to be on the ball with replacing them. It seems their President - is de-emphasizing athletics.

Unless they move up in football to another conference - they will be the permanent founding member of the CAA.

I remember when JMU cut a bunch of sports to focus on football, lots of students were wearing SOS (save our sports) or something to that effect shirts one of the years we road tripped down to the burg. Doesn't seem to have paid off in any way whatsoever.

Well they started with one strategy and then - mid stream - changed to another with the change in administrations. Because of that the results have not been what was originally anticipated.

Crazy how students scream for football, get it, and scream for other sports.

It couldn't have anything to do with being passed over for an FBS slot, could it?

Actually, Brooks is a JMU alum and was quite a good player for the Dukes under Lefty.

"A 1992 graduate of James Madison, he played three seasons under legendary coach Lefty Driesell and made two NIT appearances while earning a degree in business management. He began his coaching career as a part-time assistant for the 1993-94 JMU men’s squad that won the CAA Tournament and advanced to the NCAA tournament."
