Best jobs available at the moment: Stanford, Pitt, SLU, UNLV, UCF, Tulane

JMU would probably be ahead of or at worst even with the other openings.

The Donlon and Jeter moves don't make much sense to me. What's up with the Horizon League? 20 wins gets you fired?

Georgia Tech just fired Hewitt's replacement.

In fairness to him, in spite of having to play UNC, Duke, and UVA, he had to work with a bare bones budget because they had to pay somebody $7million to leave. He might not have been the second coming of John Wooden, but whoever walks in that situation isn't necessarily set up for success.

EDIT: While boosters may have paid a large portion of the $7million, that's still less money they have to donate to the Yellow Jacket Club (or whatever they have). So the bottom line to the GT budget is less.

No offense, Vurbel, but this is BS. There's no question Gregory inherited a shit storm, but he had ample time to bring in his recruits and get the program back to the NCAAT. Turning over a roster is never easy, but he had five years in a basketball-rich area to make his mark and failed. If they make the right hire now, there's no reason why Georgia Tech isn't in the NCAA or NIT every year.

And I would say the same thing for Paulsen, who was handed the same crappy situation from the same predecessor as Gregory. Dave gets a pass for the first three or four seasons, but then there are no more excuses about the situation he stepped into. He deserves the time and rope to bring in his guys and implement his system, but then the training wheels come off.

I think DP is the man for the job, though, and have no doubt he's up to the task. Then again, I liked the Westhead and Hewitt hirings, so take that for what it's worth.

Maybe I didn't explain right. What I meant was that as a result of the buyout financially he was in a more difficult situation. Paulsen, luckily, does not have that substantial of a hole to dig out of. Now granted, they have more money coming in, so it's sort of apples and oranges. I never implied that after 5 years a coach who can't turn things around deserves to stay. I'm just saying he had a 100 yard dash and had to give his opponents a one second head start. Atlanta has good basketball (albiet not as good as DC). However, the Georgia Tech campus isn't anything to write home about. It's not as bad at Georgia State, but it's not in the same league as UNC, UVA, Clemson, or FSU.

Ok, I appreciate your thoughts and agree on many fronts. My main objection that I didn't explain is that I never thought Gregory was a great coach. He had some good years in Dayton, but he didn't belong in the ACC — especially taking over a struggling program. It will be interesting to see where he ends up, because he is good enough to get another chance in a smaller conference.

That's actually a very good landing spot for him, Walt. I still hope Caputo at least gets an interview, but JMU could do much, much worse than Gregory.

Caputo makes a lot of sense. But if he is successful then it will only remind me of how bad O'Conner blew it. Overpaid for Hewitt AND didn't hire the guy who could have had a shot to keep Luke.

I think Keats was on Luke the second Coach L left. I'm not sure any new coach was going to stop him from making the jump to a school like Louisville. Same thing with Isaiah Jackson leaving for Providence. He saw a chance to play in a bigger conference, and nothing Paulsen said was going to change that.

Win-win for us on this whole Will Wade to Vanderbilt drama, IMHO.

I'm perfectly content for him to stay at vcu and get schooled by a superior coach in Paulsen until their fan base turns on him.

But I think it would be hilarious if he left and took their top recruit with him to Nashville, if only to watch their board melt down with hatred for a guy they now worship.

Same thing happened less than a year ago with Shaka. Guess it takes a while for art students to learn their lesson.

I'm sure vcu will ride the Shaka wagon train as long as they can. Next man up: Jamion Christian.

It appears WW is using Vandy to leverage for more "goodies" from vcu.

Scenario I want: They pony up the cash...and his results become mediocre moving forward...lol.
