The vcu job looks great on paper and in the checking account, but those are some awfully tough shoes to fill. If you're a Shaka Smart clone or disciple (like Rhodes or even Grant), you're expected to start where he left off. If you are cut completely from a different cloth, you have a roster full of recruits that were recruited to play Havoc.

Somebody will get paid handsomely to take the job, but I don't see it being the dream job most vcu fans think it is.

Funny you say that. My source on the situation, who has been pretty good says their AD has offered "less than expected" for the position, thinking the assistants want to come back just "because."

LOL the reality is...McLaughlin knows the purse strings have to be reigned in...no matter what he says. Anthony Grant is the "ace in the hole" right now....

And their board is crashing as we speak....lol.

I disagree very much so. If the pick is not liked by the fans or players you could have a precipitous drop in players not trying or transferring or the fan base bailing. They have a lot more to fall than we did. In fact I like our situation now better than theirs.

This could be the gift that keeps on giving.

The number I am hearing thrown around from my friend (the AD at Virginia Union) says McLaughlin is throwing around $375,000, and no one is having it.

I heard the same. I have a client close to vcu athletics and he says the same.

McLaughlin has thrown "feelers" to Rhoades and Wade....but the money isnt there.

He needs to get the salary DOWN. But he's playing the game of "appeasing the fan base" with known names, but giving himself the out saying we couldnt reach a deal. They make the show of the offer, but then PIVOT to the direction the AD really wants to go.


While AG is still in the mix....Jamion Chrsitian appears to be the other one EM is hot for....has ties, decent young HC, but comes at a MUCH cheaper price tag to "follow the man" than the others and it looks like an upgrade for him.

I was waiting for you to mention that name because that is what my client told me. Jamion is dead center in their sites. Additionally, I have heard that AG has stated if vcu coughs up just $175K more - he will sign.

That's what I find funny. No different than us.....fans have all sorts of visions.....but ADs have a different master to bow to.

No different than coaches, they are always making moves, to make their case for their next job.

And right now....nothing would be better for theirs than trimming down the coaching costs. I know they have high student fees, decent fundraising.....but they left all that FF4 money in the CAA and havent won any units in the A-10. At some point the finances must be looked at.

According the RamNation posters, Rhoades was responsible for everything that was good about vcu basketball the last six years. Turns out Shaka was just a figurehead. When Rhoades left, it exposed what a poor Xs and Os coach Shaka really is. Shaka was a false god. Rhoades is their real god. This all happened for the best. Rhoades will not only keep all the current players but all the commitments. NC banners will be hanging from the rafters of the Siegel Rhoades Center soon.

This just in. Apparently Ballard was the real brains behind the operation.

Thank you. Its always hard to see for the fans.....but no different than us and L. The administrators have to make tough calls at times. This maybe one of those for vcu. They're not going to spend NO money.....but I am willing to bet you its not what the fans think....

I have heard and have been on the phone with my client for the past hour. Grant will come for less than $1 million.

vcu's players are used to playing streetball and having a green light from anywhere on the court. Grant would be benching guys for bad shots left and right. Bad fit.

Probably gonna be a young bro like Ballard or Jamion Christian who can relate to their young guys.

I don't know, for a job that's suppose to be one of the top jobs in the country you would think the names floating around as top candidates would be...let's say "different."
It certainly does seem that the candidate pool is very narrow for a "plum national job."

No street cred and has to be able to relate to the thug life. They built this whole "missing father," "no options from the hood" personna, that they cant bring in just anybody or you have the PJ Carlisimo/Allen Ivereson thing....
