Gregg Marshall gets 7-year deal @ $3.3M per to stay at Wichita State.

Wow. Just wow.

Edwards has a lot of work to do if Mason ever hopes to be a consistent player on that level.

Gotta think a lot of that dough is coming from NCAA Tournament pay outs along with increased fundraising from the sustained success.

Winning really goes a long way.

Yeah wow. Its good to see a "mid major" make the investment to maintain their program.

I did enjoy a delusional vcu fan talk about how Shaka deserves that kind of money from them. Moron.

I really think we need an "Art School Panic thread" so we can fully appreciate the Havoc going on over there...:cigar: (where's the eating popcorn face)...

Can we hire the ex Texas coach if Shaka leaves?

Has Anthony Grant picked up another job yet?

What I love over at those boards is those folks who think this annual occurrence happens only because Shaka is such a great coach. Shaka has an agent. If at the end of a given season he tells that agent that he's content and will not consider other offers, this media soap opera doesn't happen. The fact that he annually feels a desire to be pursued by other programs either shows a lack of self esteem or a real desire to get out of Richmond for the right gig.

Of course, this is the school where there band director had the same self esteem issues and felt a desire to make his contract negotiation public, so perhaps that's just standard procedure down there.

Whatever Shaka's motivation is, it is a win-win situation for him.

If he takes the money then he is much richer and not living in Richmond.

If he doesn't take the money then he gets to say how much he loves vcu which makes him that much more of a god in Richmond and, I think, it helps with recruiting since he can say look what I turned down because I plan on being at vcu for a long time. He also gets to say look at all those schools who want me, shouldn't you want to be coached by me since they all think I am that great.

And as icing on the cake, he often gets a raise by just talking to other programs. And then he says it isn't about the money and all the vcu sheep eat it up with their "Praise be to Shaka."

Living in Richmond, or living in Austin and having your salary doubled.

Gosh, that's a tough one.

I guess it's a good thing for the vcu faithful that Texas has so few Top 100 recruits....oh wait.

Here's the thing about Texas...

Besides doubling, maybe tripling your salary.....even as 2nd fiddle to football...what would it be like to be coach, with a NAME BRAND SCHOOL, and access to resources that that 99.5% of others schools dream of?

Take out the vcu rivalry. If Smart isn't taking this opportunity seriously from a professional view...then he is an idiot.

Also, no state income tax in Texas, so even matching his salary is about a 6% raise.

(I said "about " Oscar - no need to tell me actually how much it is to the nearest decimal point)

vcu can give Shaka almost everything he wants -- job and financial security, a supportive administration committed to winning, an admissions office who will let in any recruit with a pulse, and a city/fan base that worships him as a god among men.

What vcu can't give him, despite the dreams of their delusional fans, is a realistic chance to win a national championship.

There's a reason why, despite greatly increased parity and the rise of the mid-major that started with our F4 fun, power programs have won every NCAA Division I men's basketball title in the modern era.

There is a glass ceiling that exists for the vast majority of programs, whether we like to admit it or not.

Texas is one of those few with the resources and stature to consistently compete for NCAA titles under the right coach.

I don't know Shaka personally and have no idea whether that matters to him .

If it doesn't, I'm sure he can stay in Richmond and be very happy winning 25-plus games every season for the forseeable future.

He is going to have a much harder time winning about two of those games a year in the near future, so let's pencil him in at 23 plus wins a season instead.

Without the two gimme wins over Bozo, Shaka could easily just schedule non-conference games against The Omaha School for the Blind and The College of Little Sisters of the Poor.

Voila! Problem solved.

Or, as a former stripper, he's just used to baring everything to the public...
