Maybe the staff just wanted a little more time to assess him during his senior season. Interesting. Even if he ends up totally average, I'll take a 6'3" PG any day of the week.

It would especially become handy when we play our safety school from Richmond.

Maybe they wanted a little more time to assess our current point guards, as well.

I know somebody here mentioned that back when he was expected to commit. Edwards obviously is not A10 caliber, and the jury is still out on Moore with only 4 games under his belt. The way things are currently looking, a PG seems likely for that last scholarship.

In a perfect world, we'd be able to sign another PG and either a senior transfer or JUCO big, but that would mean somebody (other than the seniors) on the current roster would have to go.

If we're only gonna be able to take 1, IMHO it has to be a PG.

Provided Jenkins continues to progress and can give us shot-blocking presence along with Copes next season, we should be able to RS Porter and have him spend the 2014-15 season on the Jalen Weight Gain plan.

Maybe everything we heard about what happened with Crosby was wrong...because based on what we heard, and then the comment Hewitt made about recruiting the wrong kids.......I would have assumed Crosby would never come to Mason because that could have easily been misconstrued as directly talking about him.

We will have to see if we get him the second go around. ESPN doesnt think much of him, but the reports when the first recruitment was going on he sounded like a pretty solid player

We will have Royal, Copes, Marko and Jenkins next year plus Porter. The questions are how much muscle will Porter gain this year? How effective will Royal be? Will Copes ever get his mojo back? What will Marko's junior season be like? Will Hewitt follow through on making Jenkins a two position player? And if so how many minutes will her play at small forward?

If Royal can contribute right away and Copes regains his mojo, they should be able to red-shirt Porter without issue.

Gemini, it's obviously just my opinion, but after watching Jenkins in actual college games, I'd say it's more likely that his two positions are the 4 and 5 than the 3 and 4.

I was assuming that Hewitt meant he wanted to try and turn Jalen into a 3, but with all the weight he's put on, I don't think there's any chance he could hang with 3s now on the defensive end. He's certainly strong enough already to handle himself defensively at the 5 and seems to be an instinctive shot blocker, so that's a plus.

Offensively, Royal already has a much more varied face-up game. He can make shots out to the 3 like Marko. I have no idea whether he can guard 3s either, but I'd say it's far more likely that Royal becomes a 3/4 combo than Jenkins.

Either way, I do think (barring injury) that we'll be able to RS Porter. For a kid with his upside to waste a year of eligibility would be a huge mistake.

That makes sense, Jim. I haven't had a good look at him yet, but he does seem to be more of a low post player in college than he was advertised when we recruited him.

I don't necessarily think any of our forwards will have to play double duty at the 3 with Lockett, Mayimba and Gray all in the mix, but in order to red-shirt Royal someone will have to take minutes from Copes at the 5.

This video shows some of his highlights at GT, and gives you a pretty good idea of the type of player he is. I think he's a pretty similar type of player to J2, but he just has a little more of everything in his game. A little quicker, a little better shooter, a little better court vision, and he can also hit threes, which J2 obviously doesn't do.

After all, he was the #11 PF in the class of 2011, so he has a bit more skill and natural ability than the average big man.

A highlight video is fine but he has been practicing with the team. How does Royal look in practice?
