Recruit
The 2014-2015 roster looks like this as of today:

Copes, Erik F/C Sr.
Edwards, Corey G Sr.
Gray, Vaughn G/F Sr.
Okoloji, Anali F R-Sr.

Gujanicic, Marko F Jr.
Holloway, Patrick G Jr.
Royal, Julian F R-Jr.

Jenkins, Jalen F R-So.
Moore, Marquise G So.

Lockett, Eric G Fr.
Porter, Trey F/C Fr.
Mayimba, Therence F Fr.

We have one more scholarship for next year's class, correct? If so, looks like we could use another guard.

I'm not counting Mayimba until we have confirmation he signed his LOI. Kind of strange he has been radio silent the last two days.

I believe his parents still live in Gabon, so that may be delaying things.

Parents have to sign the forms. (or at least one of them). Things are still on track for him to come to Mason, just takes time. Much like with Marko.

Hodges left in the middle of his junior year I believe in 92-93. A year earlier he got in a fight during practice with Byron Tucker and Tucker (averaging 20/game at the time) got kicked off the team....ahhh....memories.....

I really like this class so far. A fundamental shift from the type of players we have on the current roster. Gritty, defensive-minded, long, athletic. They're like Syracuse players without the offensive skill sets. Offense can be taught, but hustle, motor, intensity, etc., cannot be. Not sure if it was posted before, but check this quote from Mayimba in the WaPo article about his original commitment: “I think I can have an impact with my outside shot and the way I play defense. I will raise my hand to take on the best player on the other team,” Mayimba said. Gotta love that. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs...a-commits-to-play-basketball-at-george-mason/

We need a primetime scorer. I don't see where 60 PPGs are coming from next year.

That's easy:

Marko 14
Holloway 11
Gray 10
Royal 8
Copes 8
Jenkins 6
Moore 5
Edwards 2
Okoloji 2

That's 66 just from the returning players. Including Mayimba, Lockett and Porter, we should average 70 again pretty easily.

Assuming Copes doesn't get himself kicked out of school, that's also a very good rebounding team. Jenkins will be a double-double guy his final two years.

And the new guys bring plenty of energy and D at the wing spots.

Not bad, considering we're losing four seniors.

I'd still prefer a point guard
Nah...PG minutes are taken care of with Moore/Edwards in 14-15. We need a PG recruit for 15-16 when Edwards is gone and Moore is a junior.

We need a dynamic scorer, either wing or post, to go with the defense minded guys we signed. Might even go the JuCo route if necessary.

Any time you can recruit a good point guard, you take it. Nothing is stopping you from playing both point guards at the same time -- Hewitt has already done this with first Edwards and Allen and now Edwards and Moore.

As for a dynamic scorer, we have several potential dynamic scorers already on this roster: Gray, Holloway, Marko, Royal, and Jenkins

While I don't disagree that you take a PG when you can get one, I think it is hard to convince one to come in next year with Moore/Edwards in front of him for a year and then Moore ahead of him for the next 2.

And I'm not sure I'd called Royal a "dynamic scorer" when he has exactly 4 times in his career scored in double figures and none of them came last year. Holloway and Marko and perhaps even Gray. But what dynamic scoring have we seen from Jenkins and his 7 career FG attempts?

Marko, Gray, and Holloway could all be dynamic scorers and our "go-to" guys on offense on a defensive-minded team. I don't think Jenkins will ever be a dynamic scorer but I think he'll come close to averaging a double-double just on effort and rebounding on the offensive glass alone.

I think you obviously go after a stud PG if you can get one, but if not I think the class needs a legit wing player or someone who can step in and fill Wrights' shoes. I think Gray and Holloway could do that next season, but it would be a combined effort. Getting a recruit who has a legit shot, is about 6'4'' - 6'6'', and possesses skills similar to Wrights' would be ideal.

I concur with your assessment.

Both Jalen and Royal have the size and skillset which will make them very hard to guard. Now, whether they play more like Marko or more like Johnny Williams remains to be seen. But they both have the potential to score a lot of points here.

I think offensively what you're seeing from Jalen is a byproduct of trying to learn two positions, but the kid is obviously a smart and tough basketball player. He's not trying to do too much right now.

As for Royal at Georgia Tech, he didn't fit in with what Gregory was looking for.

And who says Edwards would be ahead of any point guard next year? Even if he is, if the recruit has size and can score he'll have a chance to take minutes at both the 1 and 2 spots his freshman year.

From the release:
“Therence is a rapidly developing player,” Hewitt noted. “He came to this country two years ago and has turned himself into, what I think, one of the better perimeter players around. His shooting is rapidly improving and has always been a very good defender and terrific athlete.”
