anyone notice that we'll have only 3 guards next year.....I guess Hewitt loves his forwards.

Barring transfers, I see 6:

PGs -- Moore, Edwards
SGs -- Holloway, Gray, Mayimba, Jackson

The latter 3 have the height to conceivably play the 3, which is in many ways interchangeable with the 2.

Great. More complicated role combinations for our genius coach to consider in game.

You gotta believe that AO is going to be gone after this season.....I'd still like to see the staff bring in another PG. While I like MM, his inability to shoot the ball really hampers his ability to run the offense. Teams already have him figured out, he's a one trick pony. I really don't see the new kid Jackson as a viable option at PG at this level, he looks too slow. We're headed for a roster of a bunch of interchangeable parts with similar size and similar skill sets. Not sure if this is a good or bad thing?

Is AO or Gray more likely to leave after this season? Obviously both could leave. At least AO has been playing lately. Is it a showcase by Hewitt so other schools have something to look at when he decides to transfer? Gray just doesn't play at all, nobody would blame him for leaving.

IMO once a student-athlete has graduated, the school should not feel obligated to pay for that 5th year of eligibility. Not uncommon for "5th years" to not be invited back for that 5th year. One would think that AO falls in to this category. Not a slam on AO, just the way business if often done in D1 athletics.

I still see 3 guards. The latter 3 have not proven they can guard other 2s. We've seen what Hewitt has tried to do with AO.

The Fordham announcers were shocked when they saw AO playing the 3. That was funny.

I like the class of kids that are coming in but it seems like all of them minus Porter having similar games and seem better suited for the small forward spot. I think we need more true 1's and 2's.....this league is loaded at the guard position. Maybe a poor mans Maurice Creek?

After watching this video of Mayimba again, he has a much nicer stroke than I thought. Granted this is a practice video where he is obviously not being covered —P49, please read that disclaimer again before responding — but he has nice arc and ball rotation on his shots from behind the arc and seems to be very consistent.

I'm just wondering since we seem to have a backlog at the 3 if we might be able to steal some minutes for Mayimba at the 2 next year behind Holloway. With his size and ball-handling ability, he could definitely pose some matchup problems on the perimeter.

I think many of the guys that Hewitt is landing fall into the 3/4 spot in high school, but have the tools to be 2/3 guys in college. All are athletic, and have decent handles, and decent shots. I like the type of roster he is creating - but I still worry about the PG position.

I worry about the PG spot too. And will never understand why he didn't come here with one in his pocket. I also worry about team chemistry and the little things that build strong teams/programs. None of which has been a strong suit of Hewitt's.

We are coming up on year 4. PG has been an issue since year 1.

How many PG's are on the roster moving forward that Hewitt trusts? (i.e. he isn't playing Corey Edwards anymore is he?).

Answer--1. 1 that had to decommit from another school to end up at Mason. And didn't Hewitt say he had learned from his mistakes at Ga Tech about roster building?

No question Hewitt is a little delusional and stubborn. Not sure how someone like that reflects and learns from past mistakes.

Maybe someone who knows recruiting more than me can answer this. Does the staff think that the new signee, Isaiah Jackson is enough at PG along with Marquise Moore? Is he (potentially) enough?

Maybe. But how is he going to guard the fast true PG's in the A10 is one concern. Also, Moore's jumper being a non threat only makes him half the PG we need. So if those two are our PG then we are in trouble b/c two PG's can't be half a PG each.

Those things certainly sound like they can be improved on. We won't really know until Jackson steps on the court, obviously. In terms of Moore's jumper, its quite ugly, but I hope that its something that is fixable. Allen couldnt shoot well at first either, but developed over time a nice shot. We'll see. Thanks for the insight.

Tom, I figured Mayimba for a 2 all along. He's long and quick enough to guard the 2 spot, and would give us impressive athleticism when paired with Jenkins at the 3 and Royal at the 4.

What I've been wondering is, if Mayimba comes along quickly enough in the preseason, could Hewitt opt to start Holloway as a scoring PG and start Mayimba at the SG?

I just get the sense that Hewitt wants more size at the 2-3 spots than we're used to having. Holloway is obviously too good to keep off the court, but he is undersized for a 2 against a lot of A-10 teams.

It's obviously been in limited opportunities, but I think Holloway has an underrated handle and feel for the game. He's crafty as hell with the ball and we obviously don't have enough of those guys.

Great point Jim. But I'm starting to worry about the intangibles needed to team build. I'm starting to think this is Hewitt's biggest weakness. Even more than the x's and o's. With what VG's bro is adding to the boards, my initial gut feeling about him is almost at 100% confirmed. And this, no matter who he recruits, is a big fat recipe for disaster.
