Does anybody know if Royal can play the 3? I know he has range outside the 3-point line, but it would mask some of our deficiencies if we could start either Royal or Jenkins on the wing. The main issue would be one of them having to cover a guard on the defensive end, which didn't work when we tried it with Marko and Okoloji.

Just throwing things out there, maybe we go with a lineup of Moore, Holloway, Jenkins, Royal and Copes/Thompson.

I really like the line up above....I have no doubt that Jenkins can play the 3 very effectively. Also its nice to have 2 options at the 5 this season with Copes and Thompson....at least 10 hard fouls between them. I know I'm in the minority but I'm actually looking forward to a more athletic lineup and also new blood to watch. At least if/when mistakes are made it will most likely come from a new patriot.

I've proposed this lineup as a possibility before. To be successful, Royal will have to be able to hit the 3 as well as advertises, Moore will have to add some kind of a jump shot and we would have to play a lot of zone.

Yea the small back court is a little troubling with this line up, but I'm pretty sure we can all agree that Moore will be the starting PG and Pat will be the starting SG. If this is the case you really do need to go "big" at the other spots. I do think a couple of the freshmen will impress and play fairly large roles in the team.

I'm really looking forward to the Cornell game. The Big Red won just 2 games last season (both at home) vs. D-III Oberlin & Ivy opponent Dartmouth.

Some Cornellian will hit a bunch of open 3's but Mason will prevail in an ugly squeaker.

Not hewitts style of play, but will probably force himself to do it. After major bitching on these boards of coarse.;)

One thing is for sure. It can't comfort the Hewitt detractors that Edwards tweeted a picture of him and Hewitt with their arms around each other yesterday. It sure looked like an endorsement to me, as temporary as that might be.

FWIW, here is a picture of Edwards with Cliff Warren 19 days before Warren was fired as Jacksonville' s HC:

How are they remotely the same, Pablo? Every AD in the country poses with his coach and players on senior night.

I'm not saying the picture of Hewitt and Edwards is a ringing endorsement, but it at least bodes well for this year that they are communicating. I'm sure Edwards is making his expectations abundantly clear. He knows his main priority as the AD at Mason is to have a winning basketball program.

I doubt the picture of Hewitt and Edwards tells us anything. What's Edwards going to do, ignore the guy and refuse photos?

As JimP correctly indicates, these pictures mean nothing.

You have no clue what either indicates. None of us do. When I posted the picture of them together, I joked that it probably wouldn't make Hewitt's detractors happy to see them so chummy together. I'm sure Edwards will be all business when it comes to any future decisions.

I couldn't care less about the picture. Of course, Edwards will publicly demonstrate his support of Hewitt. We all want Hewitt to be successful. If he isn't, then he will be fired!

That's complete crap, Pablo. I have no idea if you are in this group or not, but several people here have admitted they are rooting for us to lose this year so he gets fired. I've never been able to wrap my head around that logic. I just pull for the team that's on the floor and let everything else take its course. If he wins and is retained, good for him; if he craps the bed and gets fired, he had it coming.

Sure I want this team to win desperately as well, but would I trade another bad season for a new coach with an actual future, hope, and direction? Seems like an easier answer to me. Do I root for the team to lose? No, but I can certainly stomach it for the long term goal.

It's certainly an interesting question: Would you rather go to the NCAA tournament this season, even if you knew in your heart that it was fluky as hell and would result in an awful coach getting a contract extension, or suck it up for one more season of embarrassment to be rid of him for good?

Unless, by some miracle Hewitt wakes up tomorrow capable of being an effective coach, I'll go with option B.

Looking out for the long-term good of the program, it's not even that tough a call, IMHO.

And it's not like Hewitt is growing the program off the court or anything. Even when OCM lost at least he was one hell of an ambassador for the program/university. Meanwhile Hewitt auditions for his future job at MSNBC

Hell yes, I'll take a fluky trip to the NCAAT. I gladly took it when we beat UNCW 35-33 in one of the ugliest games ever. I also took it in 2008 when we got lucky as hell that we got to face W&M in the CAAT finals rather than vcu (who Coach L couldn't beat in Richmond). We lost both games in the first round of the NCAAT, but it doesn't mean I didn't appreciate getting there.

(Edited to correct mistake. Thanks, Joe.]
