I'm in the same boat - only I also went to WVU before transferring to Mason after a year.

The thing that sucks is that WVU has a football game that Thursday against Kansas St at 7:00, so WVU fans will have to DVR one of the two games. I'm guessing most fans won't even know their hoops team is playing. If I'm the Athletic Department at WVU, I'm asking for any tipoff time except the 7:30.
The Puerto Rican officials looked at the futbol schedule and didn't see any conflicts. WVU officials should have been more clear when they said they had a football game that day.

Didn't seem to hurt Mike Wells NBA prospects.

If he did decide to come, I suspect it would be a 3 to 5 year turnaround project at best and then he'd be on his way.

So, who wouldn't want an outstanding coach here for 3 to 5 years who could put the program back to where his father left it?

I'm as nostalgic as the next guy, but enough already with the Larranagas. That ship has sailed down to Miami. I have no problem with some day honoring Coach L's legacy here, but it's time to move on.

I agree. The Larranaga era is over here. Hopefully with Edwards on board, we'll usher in a new golden age but for now we have to deal with the Nestor/Westhead/Hewitt transition.

Of course, Jay Larranaga was never on the ship that sailed down to Miami. But, if Mason hires a coach as good as Jay Larranaga to replace Hewitt, then I will certainly be pleased.

I'm glad that you mentioned Nestor/Westhead, which IMO reflects the importance of hiring the best available coach to replace Hewitt.

But we also don't want a Rick Barnes situation either.

Being a territory of the United States, Puerto Rico has never been into soccer. They are rabid about baseball and basketball. Please keep your latins organized appropriately.

I am sure at the time Nestor and Westhead seemed like good choices. Hewitt not so much.

If Hewitt gets fired after the 2014-2015 season or gets the exit door when his contract expires here are my suggestions:

Hire a young coach who is on a upward trend like Andrew "Andy" Toole. Plenty of other schools have offered him a position. Perhaps Mason could convince him to come to Fairfax if and when Paul Hewitt is gone.

OR

Welcome back a fired NBA coach or a NBA coach who is on the hot seat back to college basketball. Someone like Brad Stevens could be a fit. Danny Ainge does not seem like a president of basketball operations who is going to wait another 5-10 years for his Celtics to make the playoffs again. So maybe Brad Stevens could be within our clutches if Hewitt is given the ax or shown the exit door after this contract expires.

I don't think being a U.S. Territory has much to do with it. Most of the Caribbean islands prefer baseball or cricket or boxing or some other sport over soccer (in the case of Jamaica it's track and field and bobsledding).

They did have a very popular soccer franchise in the Puerto Rican Islanders, which competed In the U.S. NASL and would often sell out their 22,000 seat stadium, but the government seems to have killed it.

If I remember correctly, Nestor was the hot up-and-coming assistant at the time. I guess for every Rick Barnes, you are bound to get an Ernie Nestor.

I am of the belief that we shouldn't do anything for the 10th anniversary because it will make us look like we are trying to squeeze the last drop from a cow that went dry a long time ago.

For me, 2006 was great but when people start talking about it like it was ancient history, it's time to move on. Outside of us hardcore fans, George Mason is just a blip now in basketball history.

I'd take brad Stevens in a second! But if he comes back to college ball a school with a higher profile would most likely make him an offer. With that said, he would be awesome in Fairfax!

It was 9 seasons ago. Am I the only one that feels old? :(

Lol. I was thinking of Trinidad, Pinkapp (although they are also the only island who has a strong soccer tradition as well).

This is going to sound harsher than I intended, but who really gives a flying F about where we stand in basketball history?

The 2006 season was far more than a blip in our program's history. It's about damn time that somebody in a position of authority understands the significance of that singular event and stops trying to treat it like some stroke of dumb Cinderella luck.

I'm not saying we need to keep hammering people over the head with "2006" references, but we shouldn't be afraid to take pride in the accomplishment. It's already been proven that we can be enormously successful on the national stage -- now the prez and AD need to take steps to get us heading back in that direction.

I think the mistake that the Athletic Department made was that we didn't craft a narrative post 2006 that we are a power conference on the rise.

Maybe if we tried to effectively market that narrative with our wins over Beasley's Kansas State and Villanova...

Wouldn't you say we've taken ENOUGH pride in it with the Mason Nation Hoops Sensation song and constantly mentioning the Final 4?

What about Dre Smith in 2008? What about beating Michael Beasley's Kansas State team? What about Hancock and Mike Mo beating Villanova? What about George Evans back in the day?

There's more to us than 2006...
