"DAYTON, Ohio — Matt Rogers, the rare fifth-year senior who spent his entire college career at one school, stuck around because he wanted to win a conference title and lead American University to the NCAA tournament. But less than halfway through the Eagles’ first NCAA tournament game in 11 years, the forward had to be helped to the locker room after suffering a right knee injury.
Rogers had fought through pain for much of the first half of Wednesday night’s First Four matchup. The Patriot League tournament MVP, who averaged 17 points this season, ended up playing just eight minutes and scoring seven points. With its best player — the one
who didn’t leave despite opportunities to cash in on his success and play his final season at a bigger school — watching from the sideline with crutches, American lost, 83-72, to Mount St. Mary’s.
'I feel like I still had a lot left in my heart for these guys,' Rogers said. 'For me to go out like that, unfortunately, I wish I could have done more for us and the AU community, because they deserved an NCAA win.'
Simpkins got American to the NCAA tournament in his second year. The former Maryland standout brought back nearly the entire roster from a team that finished second in the Patriot League last season, developed Rogers and senior guard Elijah Stephens (12 points Wednesday) into all-conference players and followed a strong regular season with
a 22-point blowout of Navy in the conference title game at Bender Arena.
Rogers had 25 points in that win. He ends his college career as the No. 6 scorer in school history.
'This was a dream, to do it with these guys,' Simpkins said. 'I get choked up every time I think about these guys and what they’ve done for me. We’ll be back.'”
