"FAIRFAX, VA – George Mason wrestlers will compete in the 60th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships at the NOW Arena in suburban Hoffmann Estates, Ill., December 29-30.

One of the most prestigious non-conference wrestling tournaments will feature both men's and women's divisions. Joining the women's field will be 37 men's programs.

Nine Big Ten Conference institutions will be represented, a group that includes host Northwestern, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Purdue, Rutgers, and Wisconsin. Along with George Mason, the Mid-American Conference will be represented by Bloomsburg, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Cleveland State, Ohio, Rider, and SIU Edwardsville."

"The Patriots have four nationally ranked wrestlers: #25 Kaden Cassidy (149), #25 DJ McGee (157), #23 Evan Maag (165), and #27 Malachi DuVall (184)."

"FAIRFAX, VA – George Mason's DJ McGee led seven wrestlers that competed in the 60th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships in Hoffmann Estates, Ill, Sunday and Monday.

McGee placed second in the 157 pound weight class at the 60th version of the prestigious non-conference wrestling tournament that featured 37 men's programs. McGee won four straight matches before facing familiar foe Johnny Lovett from Central Michigan, a wrestler McGee owned a 2-0 record against, including a win in the 2023 Ken Kraft Midlands tournament. Lovett edged McGee in the second overtime with riding time, 2-2.

The redshirt sophomore became only the second George Mason Patriot to compete in the championship final. Donnie DeFilippis (141) finished second in the 2000 Midlands Championships.

It's the second straight year McGee has placed, earning a fourth-place finish at the 2023 Ken Kraft Midlands Championships.

At 165 pounds, Evan Maag won three matches before losing in the semifinals to Maxx Mayfield (Northwestern) due to injury. The redshirt sophomore medical forfeited his match in the consolation bracket."

"FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason redshirt sophomore DJ McGee was selected as the East Wrestler of the Week, announced by the Mid-American Conference.

McGee placed second in the 157 pound weight class at the 60th version of the prestigious Ken Kraft Midlands Championships that featured 37 men's programs. McGee won four straight matches defeating wrestlers from Michigan State, Stanford, Harvard (nationally ranked Harrington), and Lehigh before facing familiar foe Johnny Lovett from Central Michigan. Lovett posted a 3-2 tie-breaker 2 victory against McGee in the championship match.

The redshirt sophomore became only the second George Mason Patriot to compete in the championship final. Donnie DeFilippis (141) finished second in the 2000 Midlands Championships.

It's the third time McGee has been selected for the award, winning the weekly award twice last season.

It's the second conference award this season by a Mason wrestler. Logan Messer won the weekly honor (12/10)."

FAIRFAX - The George Mason wrestling team will participate at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Multi-Division Dual Meet Championships held at the UNI-Dome on Friday and Saturday in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

The event, which features more than 100 collegiate teams across six divisions, includes 14 Division I men's programs, including multiple teams ranked in the NWCA's top 25 poll as well as a trio of Big 12 rivals.

George Mason is seeded No. 6 and will face Cal Poly in its opening dual. UNI, registering a seventh in the nation ranking will be the top seed for the Division I men's field that also includes CSU Bakersfield, Central Michigan, Drexel, Ohio, Sacred Heart, South Dakota State, SIU Edwardsville, Northern Colorado, Penn and Wyoming.

"Cal Poly: The team has been ranked in the top 25 multiple times this season. Eight of Cal Poly's wrestlers have been in the rankings this year, including six in the top 20 and two in the top eight nationally, Zeth Romney (133) is third and Chance Lamer (149) is seventh.

The seedings were based off of the NCWA D1 Mid-Major Coaches Poll, which the Patriots are ranked 10th.

The top eight seeds in the NCAA D1 Men's bracket are as follows:

4. Northern Colorado
5. Wyoming
6. George Mason
7/8. Ohio
7/8. Penn

The Patriots will compete against the third-seed Little Rock (ranked 17thnationally) or SIUE in the second round. Little Rock has been in the top 20 all season, recently beat Missouri in a dual, and has two returning All-Americans. George Mason defeated SIUE, 32-8, earlier this season on Nov. 24 in Edwardsville."

"FAIRFAX - The George Mason wrestling team competed against top mid-major schools in the country Cal Poly, SIUE, and Wyoming on the first day at the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Multi-Division Dual Meet Championships held at the UNI-Dome today in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

The Patriots, seeded No. 6, dropped the first round match to Cal Poly before defeating SIUE for the second time this season in the consolation round. Wyoming won 30-12 in the Patriots final match today.

Malachi DuVall won all three matches today to improve to 11-3 overall, earning a decision and two falls. DuVall had a fall against Cal Poly's Jake Honey and Wyoming's Riley Davis.


Tyler Kocak was also undefeated today, winning two matches by decision.

Logan Messer (2-1) and freshman James Blackman (2-1) each won two matches today.

Dominic Hargrove (1-1), Evan Maag (1-1), Kaden Cassidy (1-2), DJ McGee (1-2), each earned a win."

"FAIRFAX - The George Mason wrestling team split two duals on the final day of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Multi-Division Dual Meet Championships held at the UNI-Dome today in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

The Patriots, seeded No. 6, split the extra consolation matches today defeating Cal Bakersfield, 23-17 before dropping a match to Ohio by the same 23-17 score. George Mason finished the mid-major tournament with a 2-3 record.

Malachi DuVall split the matches today to finish 4-1 in the tournament. The redshirt junior improves to 12-4 overall.


Tyler Kocak went undefeated in three matches. After winning two matches on the first day, the grad student defeated Ohio's Austin Starr, 8-2, today.

At 149 pounds Cale Roggie saw action for the first time in the tournament and swept both matches. The sophomore defeated CSU Bakerfield's Steve Caday by major decision, 16-7.

DJ McGee earned two technical falls today in wins over Jose Farias (CSU Bakersfield) and Logan Cravatas (Ohio). He finished the tournament with a 3-2 record and improved to 13-4 this season.

Senior Logan Messer (2-1) split two matches today. He earned a technical fall over Chris Neal (CSU Bakersfield) before dropping a decision to nationally ranked #7 Garrett Thompson from Ohio.

Dominic Hargrove (141) won both his matches today to improve to 3-1 in the two-day event."

Huge win for Freshman Blackman at Heavyweight, his first win over a ranked opponent!

Rest of wins by our top guys were against dudes they should beat - glad to see though after a disappointing performance at the National Duals.

Kassidy didn’t wrestle at 149, hope his knee is alright (hurt in last match). He has a great shot at making the national tournament this year.
