Jared is still an important part of this team, whether it's starting or coming off the bench. One thing that does concern me, though, is something Steve Lappas pointed out during last night's telecast. He said Jared rarely goes to the basket with his left hand, so teams know to play his strong side and look for the hook shot or right-handed move.

A guy that big shouldn't have to rely on hooks and fadeways. He should be initiating contact and going up strong with either hand. One thing I loved about Will and Jai is they didn't shy away from contact, which is why they both averaged around 6 FTs a game. If they weren't scoring in the paint, they were getting to the line. Jared needs to have that same mentality.

Good point as Lappas did mention this point and I thought it summed a lot of the issues with him. He still looks tentative instead of looking to bruise his way to the basket. I’m wondering if that’s something that’ll come as he continues to adjust since I think he has it in him.

So I know I was critical of his play tonight, but let’s not pile on. He’s a (by all accounts) good kid and good teammate who was willing to leave a very good educational institution to come help our program win. Some games aren’t going to be his game, some are. We might not have the all A-10 player Dave talked about, but if he can contribute quality minutes and clean up a few little things he’s still a quality addition to the squad. Last year having 8 guys killed us. Maybe we’re better off starting Calixte, but I’d be very happy having someone like Reuter trading minutes and giving Greg a breather. Pretty sure Calixte would suck by the end of the year if we asked him to play the same number of mpg as he was playing at the end of last year.
College athletics is a business... If a player can’t take the criticism don’t accept a full ride.

His exact words were "He refuses to even try going to the left"

If you are a Jai Lewis/Ryan Pearson kind of player (relying on crafty post moves rather than athelticism), positioning and the ability to take it to the left and right is crucial. And being able to recognize when to pass out of the double team is equally as crucial. Ryan Pearson and Jai Lewis had more than a dozen post up moves that drove defenders crazy because they had so much in their respective arsenals always keeping opponenets guessing.

I actually think Reuter could be pretty decent if he learned to develop even a 1/4 of Jai's or Pearson's post up options. But if he hasn't up until this point, is it too late?

Wonder if Tony Bennett saw that in his game and tried to teach him multiple different moves and he just never caught on.

Regardless.... Reuter should be out in the chicken coup with Mic trying to catch those things! Greasy greasy speed..... needs to learn to piss lightning and crap thunder.

There's a difference between acknowledging that Calixte is the better player and needs to start, and just running to an internet forum to call a kid who wants to help our team win useless.

We have a large enough sample size now to know that Reuter isn't the player Paulsen alluded to. I think the expectations have been a factor in the frustration. But he can't help that Paulsen sold him as some sort of program-defining player. There's no need to pile on when he has a bad game. He's had decent games too. And there will be games where he's on and Calixte is off where we need him.

Fair enough.

I thought I remember hearing Paulsen say during the offseason that Reuter had an outside game as well. I can't even imagine that being true from what we've seen so far.

I think this what he meant by "outside game"

Yah he said something about range out to 23 feet. I think he really meant 23 inches.

Jared is coming around..his passing out of the post has been crucial on this run we've been on. Sure we wish he could finish a little better around the rim, I'm sure he and the staff are working on it.

Shhhh! Don't let sleeperpick know about this. His head might explode.
nah man @mkaufman1 was right on that other thread... just try to enjoy it... I just don't like people posting BS stats and acting like he can do something he can't. My expectations of him have been reset to 0 and I am just going to enjoy basketball the rest of the year...
