Harumph!! Sorry, fans can do their bit, but outside of a huge donor or two, which so far we don't have, it is NOT up to us to pay to keep Tony! Even if we all gave through our collective wazoos, all of us combined couldn't match even ONE big donor.
Sounds like W is laying the groundwork for passing the buck when/if Tony walks:
Blame the fans.
That really ticks me off!

I mean not 100% true. vcu makes approx. 1.5 million more than us on ticket sales alone. And we have a larger arena if we open up the entire thing. You get 9k fans a game in there and we’d have more than enough to pay Tony 1.5-1.7 million a year (which would be a pretty sizable increase).

Breathe. Hes talking to a fan at Homecoming and talking in general about helping the program. Lets not take a general comment to someone at an event as something to be ready to kick the can down the road.

I understand the point, but pushing the NIL (for better or worse) is a big part of his job these days.
I dont have a problem with NIL at all or pushing that part. I know Ole Miss has a lot of Kiffin's money coming through the Grove Collective so that they can skirt the Mississippi law of 4 year max for any state employee. Is part of CTS' salary coming from our collective?

Yeah, I know, but to me it's a bad look. And I think as president, he could have had a better response. He should have known the question might be coming.
Besides, I needed a place to vent, and where better than to you guys? :p

My take on Washington's response is that one of his main goals coming in was to increase the number of alumni donations to the school, as that's a large factor is the US News rankings. As dopey of a metric as that is, everyone is familiar with the US News University Rankings and one of the ways to rate the job of the university's president is by that stupid ranking. I think this is simply President Washington doing his job of a salesman trying to encourage our alumni to donate to boost our rankings and HELP HIM get a bigger raise.

I think it’s 5. $2 million per unit the conference earns (or about $400,000 per year per game).

So last year the conference made $8 million (Dayton x2, Duquense x2). They split 70% of that money (if I’ve got this right that’s $560,000 per year for each for the next 5) we split the remaining 30% with the other 12 teams who didn’t make the tournament. So it would be a decent bump in funding if we started making the NCAA tournament and the conference went on a run or two.

Now if the players start getting paid, they’ll take a good chunk of that money.
Actually NCAA tournament units are paid annually for six years beginning the season after they were accrued. Each unit pays approximately $360k per year (totaling a little more than $2M over six years) to the conference of the school that earned it.

The A-10 splits that revenue with a 70%/30% ratio with the school earning the unit getting the higher percentage. The other 14 (soon to be 13) schools divide the remaining 30% with the conference getting some money as well. Each game played earns a unit (except the Championship game).

So I was off by one year. If you want to see my work here it is again:

A10 4 units: $8 million x 0.7 $5,600,000/2 $2,800,000/6 (instead of 5) $466,666.67 per year for Dayton and Duquesne. Mason could afford to give the coaching staff a 400k raise without needing to raise any more money (so long as they made the NCAA tournament again in the next 5 years).

Any idea if we make anything off the gate/TV of the A10 tourney? I kinda doubt it but would be interesting.

All of this is moot if there aren’t asses in seats. Do more than just the bare minimum if you want to show the school that you care about basketball success. Anything less than 5k for the first place team, receiving top 25 votes, in the at large discussion in mid Feb is embarrassing. A quick glance at the Ticketmaster seats available for Saturday says we’re probably expecting the usual 3500ish, which frankly is just sad.

A half full stadium for the season we are having gives the admin all the ammo they need to justify what they will pay, or not pay, for basketball success.

Pres. W said what I expected him to say. That's what he is paid to do—shill for George Mason University.

Agreed. So many have said “just win”. But there is definitely more to drawing a crowd than that, unfortunately.

Though, as penance for not showing up in good numbers, I’m all for increasing student fees.

Charge 'em through the nose!!
BTW, it only cost me $400 per semester
back in my day. Four year degree: $3,200. Plus books. The most expensive of which was about $12.95.
Charge 'em out the wazoo I say!!

Random, but didn't know where to post it. I was looking at the NET Rankings and saw that UC Irvine was ranked right next to us. Cool to see Russell Turner is still there. I remember when he turned down the job before we offered Paulsen. Interesting Fact. Ryan Odom, Russell Turner, and Longwood coach Griff Aldrich all played at Hampden-Sydney under Tony Shaver.

It appears Mrs. Turner still will not let him leave Irvine. He has done a solid job at UC Irvine.
