Team would be 1-5 without him this year. This thanksgiving we have something to be thankful for.

AJ has been spectacular. He showed off his whole game last night on both ends and was one of the best players on either team. Hopefully he realizes that’s the level he can play at against lesser opponents too.

With just a little bit of Pearson’s cockiness, AJ would be an absolute monster.

In the print edition of the Post this morning, on the first page of the Sports section, there was a BIG picture of AJ going up for a shot underneath with Jalen Smith contesting (actually looks like the shot would be blocked). Caption mentions that AJ had a game high 19 pts.

Too bad that we couldn't make more of a game of it, as fully half of that page (picture + beginning of game article) was devoted to the game.

Kudos to AJ for hanging in there with the big boys.

We shoulda gone zone. Didnt expect to win but DP could of changed it up on a streaky shooting team.

We suck at playing zone. And before you point out that we were having a hard time guarding them in man, that doesn’t automatically mean switching to a zone would’ve made things better.

Despite its effectiveness, we run a full court zone press but cant run a 1-2-2 zone in hf court??? The Deaf and Blind school can play a zone but you think our athletes cant. Odd. We better learn to play zone bc we have no inside presence.

I think overall I’m just frustrated with what I interpret as DP’s stubbornness. I could be off base, but the game plan seems to be the same no matter who we play. Game after game, we see pretty much 1 offensive set and 1 set defense. Even if we can’t play zone, flashing it once or twice every few minutes would at least slow down and put some uncertainty in the other team.

(Note: It did look like he may have tried a box-and-1 at one point after the game was well out of reach.)

This frustrates me as well. I’m also frustrated that Paulsen doesn’t exploit mismatches. Instead he matches the opposing teams’ lineup. If they go small, mason goes small. If they go big, Mason goes big. But, hey, mason is 5-1. So what do I know?

Dude. Tell me where Mason had ANY mismatch in their favor vs. UMd.

Maryland "going small" is the same as us "going big". No real choice but to try and go as big as possible in that game.

Our bigs (Calixte and Oduro) also aren't fast enough to make up for their possible advantage on the offensive side. Calixte also isn't polished enough offensively to make this work. At this point, if you have a team going 4 or 5 out and running a 4 guard lineup with an under 6'9 center, the best lineup is putting Mar at the 4 and AJ at the 5.

The issue isn't the lineup, the issue is Mar still can't hit the shots he's taking, and that hamstrings us. Maybe when Kier comes back, you run Miller at the 4 with Kier at the 3 instead. At least then you'll have a guy who can be aggressive, make some shots, and/or get to the line.
