The Paul Hewitt Thread

Holy Crap I figured it out.

When Hewitt took GT to the NC in 2004, none other than Dean Keener was there by his side. Which got him the HC job at Madison.

We need to hire Keener ASAP to be an asst.

Evidently, Keener has had no interest in returning to coaching. He's a business executive in Atlanta.

Keener's out of coaching and happily so. He's got a cushy corporate job and is making just as much as he was at JMU, from what I've heard.

But he hasn't taken the phone call from TOC offering him handsome pay for mediocrity and a weekend coke/stripper room at the Mason Inn.

It took Ike a while to get acclimated, but he was a great kid and always represented Mason with class.

We could certainly use his toughness and defense on this team.

I asked John Vaughan & Ike the same question: Do you take more pride in your offense or defense? Do you have any doubt how they responded? Has Mason had a lock-down defender on the perimeter since they graduated?

No, but we will when Mayimba arrives. And he's 6'7"!!

No clue how he's going to develop, but Mayimba has all the tools to be an absolute star in college. He's really only about 6-5, but has long arms and can jump out of the gym.

He'll be the best athlete in our program from Day 1. The only one even close is Jenkins.

Even at 6'5", he certainly has the ingredients of a lock down perimeter defender. Long arms, athletic, and the intensity and desire to play defense at a high level. He's going to be huge for our team's Charmin mentality.

Yep, more than anything, we need kids who are self-motivated to play hard because we know there's no motivation coming from the staff.

Even if we're not very good, at least we could be proud of our team's mental and physical toughness.

Exactly -- I think Hewitt's tenure is salvageable if he brings in tough-minded, high energy, self-motivated recruits.

I think that's the case with both Mayimba and Lockett. Porter seems like a chill kid, though, so who knows what he'll be like.

Too bad the kid has less lift than Sherrod.

Are you talking about Mayimba? If so, that would be incorrect -- he can seriously get up.

Best comparison I've heard is to Oladipo, who was strictly an elite athlete and defender coming out of DeMatha.

Oladipo worked his a** off to improve his handle and outside shot, and that made him a lottery pick. Not saying Mayimba's gonna do the same thing, but the raw tools are there.
