The Paul Hewitt Thread

Unless Copes locates his game, I'm not sure he'll have any other choice. J2 is simply not a Division I-caliber center.

That wasn't really an answer, though, so I'll go with this: I have no earthly idea what Hewitt will do next. He's as big a mystery to me as the December version of Tony Romo.

I like Jalen a lot. But, it seems to me that Hewitt is committed to Copes at the "5", and he wants Jalen eventually to play both forward positions.

If Jalen improves his perimeter game enough to play the 3 for us, that will be incredible.

Teams on our level generally don't have 6-8, 240-pound guys who can move, shoot or handle the ball well enough to play on the wing. There are exceptions, obviously, but those guys usually spend 1-2 years in college and move on to the NBA.

More likely, IMHO, that he splits time between the 4 and 5 spots. He's already put on so much weight, I can't see him being a wing at this point.

Let's assume that Copes gets his act together, and there are situations when Hewitt wants to go big. Copes could play the "5"; Jalen could play the "4" offensively and the "3" defensively; and Marko could play the "3" offensively and the "4" defensively.

This is what we're going to need against UMass, which goes 6-10 (Lalanne), 6-9 (Putney) and 6-8 (Carter) on its front line.

GW is also big up front with Larsen (6-10), Armwood (6-9) and Garino (6-6).

Hopefully Copes has his act together by the time A-10 play starts, if not sooner.

The good thing is he's had a lot of time to practice while the rest of the team's been going to class and studying for finals.

Tom,

This is a funny line! But, perhaps it would be best not to speculate on any academic issues. BTW, the following are rules from the Davidson message board:

"We never, never discuss injuries on this board. Period. No exceptions. This is at the request of the Davidson College administration and I am happy to comply.

The same applies to an athlete's grades or academic standing.

No cussin'. There are lots of kids on this board and we aim to keep it clean.

No personal attacks of any kind - this includes personal messages.

Violate these rules and your posts will be removed. Violate repeatedly or just really make us mad and we may ban you."

What the f-ck, Pablos, you moron. Those rules are lamer than Moore's sprained ankle and Copes' study habits.

(Sorry, just wanted to see if I could violate every Davidson rule in one post.)

This ain't Davidson.

And there has been no proof Copes skipped a class to get a 6 game suspension. Do we all think honestly that skipping class is 3 games and if you do it again it's 6?

You guys aren't as smart as people told me this board was.

Too funny! And, you're right, it wouldn't be as much fun if we were as civil as the Davidson posters.

First, the disclaimer that I skipped a lot of classes when I went to Mason, so I am not judging anybody. Second, I was told by a very reliable source that it was not merely one class.

Either way, he served his time for whatever the violation was and hopefully learned from it. Here's to hoping it's behind him and he can now focus on performing on the court.

I love sources.

Skipping class didn't get you suspended when OCM was here. I know because a number of student athletes were (sometimes) in some of my classes. They were always there when it mattered, but they missed a lot, too.

I have to assume it was actually affecting academic performance to earn a suspension.

You're much smarter than any of us could have anticipated.

I'm glad some of you can still be as optimistic as I once was...
Patriot2000-I am pretty much in the same boat as you. I was still optimistic through the beginning of this year, but as it has become painfully obvious that we have made very little progress, and we seem to be suffering the same things that GT suffered, if any, since last hear, my optimism has faded away...

The one guy on our roster that I'm really concerned about Hewitt screwing up is Holloway. By insisting that Patrick focus so hard on becoming a complete player, the coach seems to have turned his offensive game into a shadow of its former self.

The question I have is, why do you recruit a gifted scorer and insist he become a lockdown defender? .

I love the guy, but I think it's more insisting he become just a fairly competent defender, and in some cases just try on that end.

This is an example of what I think is a ridiculously unfair criticism of Hewitt. I mean, I don't know anyone close to the team or outside of the program that doesn't think Holloway needs to improve on that end of the court.

I mean, really? Do you seriously believe this? What exactly is "developing players" if you completely ignore one half of why they're on the court to begin with?

Jeez, I don't even like Hewitt necessarily, but it's stuff like this that makes me have to defend him. L would be the exact same way.

The stuff about his defense was mostly hyperbole. Patrick does need to learn to be something more than a turnstile on the defensive end. That's on him.

But I've been around basketball long enough to know what it looks like when a kid is struggling with his confidence. Do you not agree that Patrick is wearing that look like a mink freaking coat right now?

He came in with all kinds of swagger and looked like he was going to become our next great offensive player. Now he's hardly capable of squeezing off a shot with conviction ... looks to me like he's second-guessing himself, knowing if he misses a couple, he's probably going back to the bench.

The kid is too good a shooter to not even be hitting 30 percent on 3s.

Hewitt should just put Holloway in the game and see what he can do with 30 minutes of playing time. This team isn't going anywhere anyway ... what's the difference?

Sure, why make anyone earn their playing time. Just give him 30 minutes a game just to see.

You going to make the same offer to Vaughn Gray who is shooting it better than Holloway this year AND playing better defense?

Sure, if it was up to me, all the young guys would be playing.

If the present sucks -- and it does -- why not see what your future looks like?

How many times have we seen a Freshman light it up behind the 3 point line only to go into a Sophomore slump? I don't think Hewitt had anything to do with Patrick's slump.
