or he finally reached his potential because he was healthy

Your emotions are hilarious to watch: Paulsen sucks because he lost a few games, Paulsen is a great coach because he won a few games, Paulsen sucks again because he lost a few more games.

Question for everyone: would you rather be in our shoes or in UMass, St Louis, or what looks to be URI’s shoes?

Anybody and their momma would rather be in URI's shoes and have their coach over Paulsen... St Louis coach we know he sucks.. they also have like 6 scholarship players right now... must use the same excuse Jim does for Paulsen all the time even though we routinely suit up at least 10... and UMASS I honestly don't know. I feel like I like McCall but am not close to the situation...

so for your question
URI: hell yes rather be their fans
St Louis: he sucks but can recruit. Paulsen just kinda sucks altogether
UMASS: unsure at this time

Much rather be a Mason fan at the moment than UMass or SLU where the team is progressively improving (albeit a slow start), but URI is a much better place to be in considering Cox picked up where Hurley left them and has been with their program for many years at this point. Even though this year has been disappointing, as long as Paulsen wins 1 more conference game, he will be the first to have a winning season in the A10 which is still an achievement.

We're all just waiting for the program to potentially take the next step above and beyond the "gradual improvement".

Uh are you forgetting their senior years when we won 20 games? Moore’s double double machine. His triple double? Those games were that year. Jenkins was a beast for us.

Junior to senior stats:

Jenkins 2015-2016: 7.1 pts, 5.5 rebounds, .6 assists (21.4 mpg)
2016-2016: 12.0 pts, 6.1 rebounds, 1.9 assists (27.7 mpg)

Moore 2015-2016: 11.4 pts, 6.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists (32.5 mpg)
2016-2017: 16.9 pts, 10.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists (34.9 mpg)

Most crucially, Moore went from shooting 6% from 3 to shooting 30% from 3.
What?!?!? I mentioned nothing about the years that Moore and Jenkins played under our current coach, Dave Paulsen. Re-read my post, my friend—"PH"= Paul Hewitt. Many of you are so eager to pounce upon others' mistakes that you see only what you want to see. Your perspicacity is slightly off.

Dude, this is Cox's first year ever as a head coach. There is no way you can say his first year that you see something in him that would put him in the top half of the league right now (unless you think letting your team bomb away threes when you are the worst 3-point shooting team in all of division 1 when you have Cyril Langevine and Jermaine Harris on your roster as a solid strategy).

When have I ever said he is a great coach?

he recruited Jermaine Harris and Harris didn't de-commit and sign at 150 other D1 programs like he could have. They are one of the worst 3 point shooting teams in D1. Please give me David Cox over Paulsen... Cox also has every single player returning plus brings in a stellar 3 star wing....

If you think its easy to lose the amount of players Cox did off of last years roster... come on man....

Yet we give Paulsen a pass for three guys getting injured (two who weren't contributing at all). This fan base is so used to be a loser that kinda being a loser makes people happy. Very sad

PH was a far superior recruiter than DP. So, to say DP inherited a "dumpster fire" is just silly. Sure some of the players where knuckle heads (Holloway), but he also inherited quality players/men in Shevon Thompson, Marquise Moore, Jalen Jenkins, and Marko Gujanicic.

Despite the “gems” DP inherited, the team still finished 11-21 overall. If Mason made an upgrade in a coach, you would expect the team to perform better with the same players.

Since we are cherry picking which coaches to "choose" over Paulsen... Here is a stat table of sorts of A10 coaches who have been coaching their teams "Paulsen" amount of years or less.. Pretty telling who I would choose or wouldn't choose over Paulsen.. but here you guys go.

Dave Paulsen- GMU 4th year: Record 15-12 OOC 6 wins... Career Record at GMU 65-64. Roster classes for top 10 players: SR1, JR3, SO3, FR3. Top player this season: Otis Livingston II. Top recruit next year: 2 star Xavier Johnson (certainly not Oduro). He was recruited by Columbia and American. Outlook for next year: Missing the heart and soul of last 4 years. Returning senior class plus Greene should provide enough talent for top 6 A10 finish.. Hartwell and JDS should take a step up. Calixte should continue to improve

Ashley Howard-Lasalle 1st year: Record: 8-18 OOC: 2 wins...Career Record at Lasalle 8-18... Roster classes for top 10 players: SR1, JR3, SO4, FR2 Top player this season: inherited senior Pookie Powell. Top recruit next year 6 ft 11 3 star Brandon Stone... He was offered by PSU, Pitt, Kansas St, Houston, Auburn, Duquesne. Outlook for next year: Bleak but filled with talented young big men (top A-10 offensive rebounder individually) Would I take him over Paulsen: Probably not but too early to tell (he has already landed a bigger recruit than Paulsen has in 4 years)

Matt McCall-UMASS 2nd Year: Record: 10-18 OOC 7 wins... Career Record at UMASS 23-38. Roster classes for top 10 players: SR1, JR4, SO2, FR3. Top player this season: RSJR Luwanne Pipkins (rumors have it he is transferring... would be big loss) Top Recruit next year 6ft 6 SG Prestos Santos... he was offered by URI, Bonnies, Buffalo, GW.. Outlook for next year: If Pipkins comes back to join Baptiste, Clergeot, Tre Woods (who chose UMASS over us) etc UMASS should be top 6 next year... Would I take him over Paulsen: Probably not at this point.. Next year could change my mind.

Anthony Grant-Dayton 2nd Year: Record: 19-9 OOC 8 wins.. Career Record at Dayton 33-26. Roster classes for top 10 players: SR1, JR3, SO3, FR3. Top player this season: RSFR Obi Toppin who people are talking about having NBA type of skills. Anthony Grant's recruit in his first year... Grant able to recruit Toppin, Crutcher, as well as 3 transfers all 3 star who have yet to play a min for Dayton.... Top Recruit Next year: RS JR transfer Ibi Watson from Michigan.. kid is a baller... Outlook for next year: Top 3 with vcu and Davidson IMO... will be loaded at 4 out of 5 positions... Would I take him over Paulsen: HELL YES "Rick Flair WOO"

Will do the next 4 schools after lunch.. GW not going to be included because MOJO is possibly worst coach in D1 basketball.. BUT URI, SLU, vcu, Duquesne are mostly all yes' over Paulsen.. maybe not Ford because he has had like 2 rape incidents and 4 kids transfer out the past two years...

But Dambrot, vcu Coach who I won't name and Cox are all much more talented and better than Paulsen

For example, what players have they truly developed? (I know there’s some just looking for your answers)

Huh?!?!

Kier and Greene are probably two of the more improved players in the league this year.

Moore developed into a pro after two years with DP and his staff.

At Bucknell, Muscala developed into an NBA player after four years with DP. He was a two-star, very lightly recruited kid from a Minnesota suburb in high school.

Can we just rename this thread the “Dave Paulsen isn’t a good enough coach or recruiter for some of us” for now until the next win streak when we change it to “Dave Paulsen is our savior?”

That way when I come on the boards I know what stage we are at In discussing Paulsens worth to us.

thats only some of you guys that do that.. Paulsen is the definition of mediocre. Some are fine with that, some are not. 4 years is plenty of time to realize we won't be NCAAT bound with Paulsen nor win an A10 championship... very easy to see for those that have our eyes open.

I just really want to see if this post ages well. Hopefully within a year or two you’ll be proven wrong.:crazytongue::cigar:

Sleeperpick is the guy who would’ve run Coach K out of town for being “the definition of mediocre” in his first four seasons at Duke (62-57 overall, 20-36 ACC).

In Year 6, Duke finished 37-3 and was national runner-up. Coach K won his first national title in Year 11 and the rest is history.

Sometimes it pays to be patient.

Coach Dave Paulsen is Coach K and 3 of our 6 big men have panned out which is absolutely stellar.
He will always be better than Neubauer and Mooney though so hopefully they stick around (even though they routinely beat us)

We have 1 good win in year 4 of Dave Paulsen. I repeat 1. And for some reason Anthony Grant stopped giving the ball to Cunningham who was on pace to score 50 points 5 mins into the game..

Are you really satisfied with 1 good win? St Joe's turned into a dumpster fire, barely squeaked out two vs UMASS without their best player, URI is young and no good this year...

"Oh that's fine sleeperpick, in Dave we trust.. Coach K was barely .500 after 4 years at Duke"
"Dave inherited a dumpster fire, just wait till next year...." been hearing that one since beginning of last year and I am still waiting.

He is sure as hell amazing for beating out the lakes of Mount St. Mary's and Columbia for our recruits as well as recruiting the 9th best prospect on PVI..

Wake up

This is silly. Coach K made the NIT Quarterfinal in his first year. And then the round of 32 in the NCAA tournament in year 4.

No matter how many temper tantrums you throw, Paulsen isn’t leaving any time soon.

Fortunately, our president and AD aren’t petulant children.
