Ed Ogeron went 3-21 as head coach of Ole Miss and 6-2 as head coach of USC. Obviously the talent was better and the competition less, but that win at Stanford is still a great one. When he was asked about the difference, he said having time to reflect and realize the mistakes he'd made helped him be a better coach the second time around.
Ga Tech fired Hewitt on March 13th and Mason hired him on May 1st. Not a lot of time to reflect and figure out what you were doing wrong.
