Predict the Next Coach Pool

I had fallen in love with the Howland idea. I knew that might be a stretch, but one can dream...

On the negative side, and I know I'll likely get shot for bringing this up, but if any of what Jim was hearing was true, I wonder if we had pulled the trigger on Hewitt earlier, if we could have sealed the deal with whoever we supposedly had a verbal agreement with. It would have been nice to have done so before the market heated up for good coaches and we end up in a bidding war or, even worse, being used as a pawn by our target coach. If the guy really wasn't coaching at the time, no reason a deal couldn't have been inked before our competition started firing their coaches. The wait, along with the rumors has me a little concerned.

On the positive side, there seems to be a lot of good coaching talent out there that is being talked about. And, If our target all along was one of the coaches that just finished playing, there is no way we could have signed a deal early.

I guess we may never know who the original target was, if there was one, and that may be a good thing... Bottom line, I am just waiting for the announcement to see who we land and hoping the longer it takes that is not a bad sign. Rushing our last pick could have been partially (or mostly) to blame for the last bad choice...

Fingers crossed...

Just remember, we can't talk to a coach still coaching and there are several still doing so. Keep those spirits up.

Best thing about this process is all of the coaches mentioned so far can out-coach Hewitt in their sleep. No matter which one we eventually hire, we're all but guaranteed to have an upgrade.
True but will he be able to out coach the best in the A10? THAT is going to be the measure of a good hire.

We can't, but that's the benefit of hiring a searching firm. I'm sure the searching firm has had plenty of conversations with coaches still playing.

Or at least with their agents
This is the true key...It doesn't matter if you can't talk to the coach directly. The agent is the person who everything runs through. It's the reason why 90% of the time guys can honestly say "I didn't talk to so and so" and not be lying. It doesn't mean their agent didn't have extensive conversations with a school's AD.

Exactly. When we fired Hewitt had no bearing whatsoever on the coaching pool from which we were selecting or the people we were considering. I'm sure exploratory discussions were going on well before March 1st. Hell, I'd bet a Cherry Coke that Edwards knew several months ago he was looking for a new coach and has literally been counting the days down until the season was over.

Would that be a (Scott) Cherry Coke?!?!

This search feels like its all about money. Sort of dirty car salesman feel. Guys trying to move up and make more cash. Seems like all candidates know how to coach but the difference is in the recruits and overall age of players. You can win with 2 star guys who are older players, see GMU Final Four. And thats what we are seeing with most of our candidates. Except for Jerod Hasse who led the youngest team in the tourney to an upset win over iowa state. Talk about a guy who will be a hot commodity next year, its gonna be Hasse.

So maybe the hardest part for BBB is finding the guy with the right character that will fit into the Mason family? If so, why not someone who has been here before and fans love, like Cherry. Very similar situation as Prohm, one bid league crap. Anothe point, cant judge a guy based off a few games in March. This being our first real coaching search, its evident that one thing is real. Its simply a hard equation to crack, even if you have millions.

Mike Young would probably be my pick at this point (I don't think we'll get Prohm or Hurley -- they are going to P5 schools). However, I have heard that his wife's big time job at one of the big accounting firms is what has been keeping Mike at Wofford.

Pretty sure there are 1 or 2 decent accounting firms in DC and NoVa.

Perhaps doubling his salary would be incentive for her to relocate.

Going to throw this name out again because this is a great stat - Rick Byrd of Belmont. His team is just one of only 29 NCAA D1 programs to make the Tourney at least 7 times in last 10 yrs, & just one of 5 in a non-BCS conference.

Can't see anyway he leaves Nashville though unless Knoxville comes calling.

Ron Hunter
I didn't think he was an option since RJ has another year of eligibility remaining, but now that RJ is probably leaving early for the NBA, hiring Ron Hunter would be possible. He might be out of our price range, though -- I'd imagine GSU is planning a big raise for him after the season they just had. And it might be smarter for the industry to wait and see if he can win without his son before any bigger program scoops him up.

First interview question would be, "Ron, do you have any other sons who are future NBA first-round draft picks?"
