Coach on the hot seat: Paul Hewitt, George Mason. When Hewitt arrived at George Mason three years ago, he was confident he'd thrive at the mid-major power. "There's only one thing left for me to do in college basketball, and that's try to win a national championship," he said in Oct. 2011. "I feel like we can do that here." Not only has Hewitt not achieved that goal so far, he also hasn't even made the NCAA tournament. The Patriots went 11-20 in their first season in the Atlantic 10 last year and return just 44.1 percent of their scoring, not a good sign for a coach who may be shown the door if he doesn't show progress this season.

Add this to an ESPN preview that highlighted last year's atrocious defensive numbers and a CBS preview that detailed awful offensive numbers and the picture should be just about complete for Brad Smith as he tries to right the ship. No good numbers to point to. Wish I could be positive only a month before the season. All we need now is a Sporting News preview detailing Hewitt's egregious salary and you've got all you need to know.

12) George Mason - Saying the Patriots (11-20, 4-12) struggled in their first A-10 season is what we call an understatement. Now coach Paul Hewitt must find success without a single returning player who averaged double-digit point last season. Forward Jalen Jenkins showed double-double potential at times and guard Patrick Holloway should be one of the top outside shooters in the conference. If former Georgia Tech transfer Julian Royal produces as hoped and senior center Erik Copes finally lives up to the hype with which he entered school, then perhaps GMU can shock the naysayers.
