Because as we all know nothing could possibly go wrong once private equity takes over college athletics…
Because the NCAA and universities have done such a great job up until now...
I'd rather see voluntary funding go to these programs rather than have these poorly run institutions forcibly taking money from students and taxpayers.

You realize that your "voluntary donation" vision would probably doom us to a bleak future?

We're not a self sufficient program like Kentucky is. Would that be nice? Sure. But we have a ways to go as far as building fundraising relationships (Shouldn't Daryl Green be doing this?)

As far as "forcibly taking money from students and taxpayers". Each institution is different. I'd argue Gregory Washington, apart from the cricket stadium flub up, is doing okay. We have two good coaches in Vanessa and Tony. Time will tell how he approaches other facilities.

The answer is investing in athletics as a front door. The answer isn't Atlas Shrugged Fiscal Austerity by shifting to voluntary donations.

I didn’t say it should all be private, but the hand wringing that occurs when someone comes up with an idea to fund it without burdening people that don’t have a real say is so predictable and tiresome.

He has flubbed or almost flubbed many things, some of the most important things, too (handling English, almost flubbed Tony, logo and rebranding, etc.). The cricket thing wasn’t really his issue so I am not counting that. He has made some decent decisions, too, though. I’ll give a C as a grade.

The logo/rebranding from what I’ve read is all his decision and He did the same thing at Brown to leave his mark. But that infamous picture of him riding in the car wearing two different logos shows the jury is out on whether we present one clear logo to the world. What’s stopping us from doing “George Mason basketball presented by (private equity firm)”? Half of the money could go to athletics and half could go to the endowment or to scholarships for students. Creative thinking is needed. Remains to be seen if He’ll try creative ideas.

I think you are getting the athletic director and university president mixed up.

Detailed article on average NIL income by sport, position, etc. Should be a "gift" article so no pay wall for those without NY Times subscription.

* These are estimates of the maximum amount of Revenue sharing per school allowed under the proposed NCAA revenue sharing model scheduled to become effective for the 2025-26 fiscal year. Participation is optional, schools can elect not to share revenues with athletes or share revenues at an amount less than 22%. The annual cap of $ 21 million is the current estimate for the 2025-26 fiscal year. This cap is scheduled to increase to $ 33 million annually per school over the next ten years based on the proposed revenue sharing model. Revenue sharing is in addition to any NIL compensation and athletic scholarships received by athletes.

Data is currently available only for public colleges & universities, detailed data is not currently available for private colleges & universities. See our Methodology page for a summary of our data sources and procedures.

Computed revenue includes event tickets and admission fees, TV, media and royalty rights, bowl game and event compensation and all related revenues. Revenue does not include funds from school support, student fees or unrecompensed (i.e. charitable) contributions to the athletic department from alumni and boosters."

Hoping that all non Power 5 Conferences get behind this

Yes. The rest of the NCAA members have been subjected to the greed at the top since at least the 1970s and now they’re expected to pay 60% of the payout of this settlement despite having 1/10th (at best?) of the revenue of the top leagues. Doesn’t seem fair.

Exactly. The "agreement" is a travesty. The issue was related to people denied NIL opportunities. Most, if not all, the plaintiffs were P5 and the money the P5 people get versus the rest of the conferences is probably well more than 9/10ths.

The logic they used to come up with the 60% for non-P5 was completely disingenuous. Instead of looking at the source of the problem and having the P5 pay their fair share, they switched to an unrelated apples to oranges analysis and said the non-P5 gets 60% of the money from the NCAA so they should pay for 60% of this settlement even thought they were probably 1% of the actual problem (at best).

Even worse, ONLY the P5s were consulted on the agreement. Gee, I wonder why they liked it.

"KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- In what's believed to be the first arrangement of its kind, Tennessee fans for all sports will be charged a 10% 'talent fee' on tickets to help pay athletes as part of the new revenue-sharing plan set to begin in 2025.

The university shared the news with football season-ticket holders via email Tuesday, which included an impassioned four-minute video of athletic director Danny White telling fans the talent fee and other strategies were 'part of an extensive plan to continue our dominance in college athletics and build something like never seen before.'

In addition to the 10% increase on all ticket invoices -- season tickets and single-game purchases -- as well as donations for those seats, Tennessee will add an average increase of 4.5% on all football tickets.

'In this era of name, image and likeness (NIL), there has never been as close a connection between resources and competitive success,' said White, noting that Tennessee had captured the last three SEC All-Sports trophies. 'We want to be a leader in college sports. That means we want to be a leader in revenue sharing.'"

Is there anything stopping us from doing this with a smaller percentage for our talent fee?

We need every dollar to battle against GW and vcu for Atlantic 10 Championships! Go Mason!

Lack of demand? The possibility of turning away the few people who want to come to our games? The reality that the juice probably wouldn’t be worth the squeeze for 4,000 average attendance versus 100,000 plus for home football games at Rocky Top?

Other than that, I got nothing lol.

15-16 home games. 3500 on average. If each ticket had a 10 dollar fee per game? We’re looking at 560,000 in revenue. If we do it over two years? We can try to get a 5 star NBA caliber player who could get a one year one million dollar deal. Why not save up and roll the dice to try to get our Marcus Camby?
