Should have clarified— more than just when he got carted off (although I’ll maintain they probably win in regulation with him in the game with 2 to go). He was very clearly nursing an injury coming into this game, then rolled an ankle in the first half, and he was still absolutely having his way with our guards. He was doing that at half strength.

Yes it’s obvious that without Bones, vcu’s roster is pretty much hot garbage. They’ll probably lose out if his foot injury is serious.

Playing devil's advocate, imagine how Oduro would thrive on a team surrounded by the shooters Ryan, Jai and Will had around them. Those guys had the luxury of teammates, coaches and a game plan that focused on operating inside out and spreading the floor. I agree he was the recipient of some nice dishes yesterday, but more often than not Oduro has to come out to get the ball or score on rebounded misses.

If I was an opposing coach, my strategy against this team would be to pack in a zone to stop dribble penetration and Oduro in the post. Period. It's very rare that Kolek, Miller, Greene and Hartwell get hot from behind the arc in the same game, so I would take my chances.

I dont have to imagine, I saw him at Paul VI...

This one does, definitely. Good pickup by Mason. Love to see him develop into a 15/8 guy.

I’d be thrilled with those numbers, especially the rebounds. Yesterday’s performance was definitely a pleasant surprise but obviously an outlier.

It’s one thing to compare talent of previous Mason big men, but the main thing Jai, Will and Ryan had that Josh lacks right now is swagger and a killer instinct. He definitely has confidence in his abilities, but he still plays passively on both ends. Hopefully, that fighter aspect comes with more experience.

That swagger/ killer instinct is starting to grow. He had a block yesterday that I think he normally wouldn't try for. Biggest thing for me was how much confidence Frazer provided our guards and in turn Josh. Having a Point forward, a freshman at that, bring the ball up and drive it down vcu's throat was impressive. Frazer attacked rim and dropped some nice passes.

I agree. Oduro played with an edge yesterday that really was great to see. Not that he wasn’t talented or did things prior, but he finally took the game and just threw himself around. Frazier also played with that same edge.

Was it because it was vcu? I guess we will find out. Last year it was very similar as they quickly fell flat afterward.

So now we have to decide if DP is worth keeping because he seems to do better against vcu than past coaches, but give up on a more general successful program.

Great!

I'd like for the arts dump of va to be a little more "up" to play us. Don't get me wrong, its great beating that shit hole, but they seemed low energy on defense and we still needed OT. Can't say enough about how big/interesting this next game is. Wonder if Frazer can also hit trey's?

agreed. Seemed like last year they were lethargic too.

I think Frazier can shoot a bit. Might not be a huge part of his game but I think it’s a part of it.

You clearly know bigs develop late. What a center does in high school is close to irrelevant for most.
This! There is a huge learning curve for bigs.
In a perfect world, Oduro would have redshirted last season and hit the weight room hard.

He's developing nicely but in my view, his freshman season was a wasted year of eligibility.

Yes. But he gets it back now as this season doesn’t count.

I don't disagree that bigs developer slower and later in general. The ones Mason always gets take some time, just the nature of what they have recruited. Mason is going to have to start recruiting kids who are a bit more ready (like a Kolek) considering how the A10 recruits but thats a topic we've beaten the horse on.

That said, in the A10, many times coaches go get a BCS transfer to help bridge that time that a younger big needs to develop. Reuter did that for Calixte to a degree, but somehow that fell flat. If Oduro had an experienced big to go up against and was a 10-15 minute guy for the first year transitioning into 25-30 minutes I would have been much happier. Obviously if Reuter sticks around, Oduro redshirts and that probably helps him as well, although now he gets an extra year which I think will really benefit him.

But it is what it is, I'm happy Oduro is on the team.

Crickets from Sleeper after Oduro's coming-out party. Maybe he's upset that he didn't get an invite?! :D
I didn't watch a second of the game I already posted that. Have watched since and the kid was dominant offensively. Those of you saying he had a great defensive game are just pushing a narrative. He had one block and rebounded sufficiently for being the tallest dude on the court. He took over the game offensively which someone has needed to do all year, be it Miller, Javon or the skeleton once named AJ. also went what 8-10 from the line which is a full 30% better than his average almost. W0ulda lost the game if the kid played to his average at the line. Hopefully this is more to come rather than a Goanar Mar vcu explosion. Has another chance against GW who has 1 center on their roster if Parr is still out and Moyer not playing could be a nice win to pad the #extendDP folks

Otis Frazier was a breath of fresh air and looked really good.

DP's friend, You also talk about great game planning... while his substitutions were the best they have been in over 2 years, his big time situation play calling was DP to a tee and horrible. The timeout with 3 secs left is particularly laughable. Don't need to call a timeout to let the other team draw up a play to tell your guys to foul. Just like people don't listen to PMP because of his negativity, I refuse to listen to you because everything you came in saying 5 years ago about DP has proven to be explicitly false.

This isn't D3 and if you think his game planning and set plays were excellent you are just a homer.

To win that game and Kolek not being able to hit the broad side of a barn was truly impressive. Always good to beat up on vcu and be a bad loss.

Hes too busy blowing AJ, er I mean crying over the bench warmer.
You know what? AJ worked his tail off, and went from a guy who was just a dunker and shot blocker to a guy who could do a lot of different stuff on a basketball court.

He's going through a tough time at the moment, but he's never been anything but a team kid, never pissed and moaned.

I hope he's able to regain his form, and obliterate the career blocks record at Mason.
