GIVING DAY 2023
I don't disagree with what you are saying. But, who's left from his 2023 Final Four?

Sure, Coach L benefited from the booster. Do you think that John Wooden would have won 10 NCAA championships without the benefit of a booster by the name of Sam Gilbert?

But, the fact of the matter is that the massive player turnover is adversely impacting the game; and great coaches who rely on instilling discipline and a winning culture are leaving the profession.
I don't think you can compare the two eras and situations.

Having an NIL checkbook that is large, and letting you buy the very best players, mold them into a winning team vs someone who coached in the 1960s and didn't deal with transfers, NIL etc are two totally different things.

But I do agree with where you are coming from. The coaches who are considered "old school" at this point of building a program over the course of 4 or 5 years, and maintaining players etc, are not sticking around. Its an era of either adapt to the new environment or jump out. Quite frankly I can't blame any coach at this juncture for jumping out in this crazy environment. Its most likely why Paulsen will stick in a league like the Patriot League where there is less crazy to deal with in some regard. In addition, you most likely wont see many coaches loyal to the same program for more than a few years at a time.

Right now Larranaga is still in it, and obviously was willing to work through it. However, if his large NIL bank is gone, its going to be very tough for him to overcome that. Thats not to say he cannot, because he has overcome many things in his legendary coaching career. The peers that were cut from the same upbringing and cloth, many have moved on.

L is 907 years old. Maybe just finally hitting the point where the game is passing him by and he can’t keep up. These losses are Xs and Os just as much as anything else. He just doesn’t have it anymore, and should go enjoy retirement.

He was 39-51 with a 16-41 conference record in the 3 years leading up to NIL starting.
How much did NIL really help him compared to his competition? Arguably, the best player on that final 4 team was Jordan Miller. Hell, the core of his roster doesn’t look miles ahead of say Paulsen’s 20-21 squad and we couldn’t even crack top 4 in the conference.

Nigel Pack doesn’t transfer in from Kansas State without 800k. Omier’s transfer surely wasn’t free. Isaiah Wong threatened to leave if he wasn’t paid more. Etc.

My point is that while many “old school” coaches are choosing to step away because of the current climate, L initially benefitted greatly from it.

I don’t know why so many get defensive when it’s suggested that it’s time for the man to retire. He deserves his flowers for what he’s accomplished, but it seems to be over. Let him ride off and do something else. The man didn’t even know he was Cuban until he was 60, maybe he can visit the motherland.

Money propped him up briefly, but the game had/has passed him by many moons ago. Nobody plays whiffle ball anymore either, by the way.

I perhaps am as sad as anybody, as I have been one of L's greatest advocates over the years, defending him from critics who took offense at him signing a contract with us that he said would allow him to retire here, then ripping it up roughly seven minutes later.

I hope he goes out gracefully, pardoning Jay for temporarily derailing the Celtics, and Jon for stealing my Bojangles 20 years ago.

And whatever crimes they may or may not have committed in China or Ukraine, peddling their fathers influence overseas

Let's not forget that Coach L was here for 14 seasons (1997-2011), and turned down an offer to coach his alma mater (Providence) - https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/news/story?id=3326140

"Larranaga turns down Providence offer, gets 3-year extension at GMU

FAIRFAX, Va. -- Jim Larranaga, who took George Mason to the Final Four two years ago, signed a three-year extension to remain coach of the Patriots on Wednesday, turning down an offer to move to his alma mater, Providence College.

The deal is on top of an extension Larranaga signed shortly after GMU's Final Four appearance. He is now under contract to the school through the 2014-15 season.

The new extension came after a strong courtship from Providence, which is looking for a replacement for Tim Welsh. Welsh was fired last month after three losing seasons in the last four years.

'We offered him a very substantial package but he was too comfortable in his current situation and opted to stay at George Mason,' Providence athletic director Bob Driscoll said Wednesday. 'As a result, I will continue to have ongoing discussions with the other finalists in this search.'"

I guess Larranaga missed the opportunity to join the "lose a buy game to a MEAC school club"
