I don't think you can compare the two eras and situations.I don't disagree with what you are saying. But, who's left from his 2023 Final Four?
Sure, Coach L benefited from the booster. Do you think that John Wooden would have won 10 NCAA championships without the benefit of a booster by the name of Sam Gilbert?
But, the fact of the matter is that the massive player turnover is adversely impacting the game; and great coaches who rely on instilling discipline and a winning culture are leaving the profession.
Having an NIL checkbook that is large, and letting you buy the very best players, mold them into a winning team vs someone who coached in the 1960s and didn't deal with transfers, NIL etc are two totally different things.
But I do agree with where you are coming from. The coaches who are considered "old school" at this point of building a program over the course of 4 or 5 years, and maintaining players etc, are not sticking around. Its an era of either adapt to the new environment or jump out. Quite frankly I can't blame any coach at this juncture for jumping out in this crazy environment. Its most likely why Paulsen will stick in a league like the Patriot League where there is less crazy to deal with in some regard. In addition, you most likely wont see many coaches loyal to the same program for more than a few years at a time.
Right now Larranaga is still in it, and obviously was willing to work through it. However, if his large NIL bank is gone, its going to be very tough for him to overcome that. Thats not to say he cannot, because he has overcome many things in his legendary coaching career. The peers that were cut from the same upbringing and cloth, many have moved on.
