Important win. Losing to Loyola would have surely dropped them out of the top 25. Two set piece goals were the difference.

MEN'S SOCCER vs. Duquesne
WHEN:
Saturday, October 12 | 7 p.m.
WHERE: Fairfax, Va. | George Mason Stadium
RECORDS: George Mason (10-1-0, 4-0-0 A-10); Duquesne (8-2-1, 3-1-0 A-10)
SERIES RECORD: Duquesne leads, 4-1-2
LAST MEETING: The Patriots defeated the Dukes, 1-0, on Oct. 7, 2023 at Rooney Field in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Duquesne would be another quality win - it's also pups night at the game with free water bowl give aways (which oddly, yet predictably, I don't see mentioned anywhere in the game article)

Mason blows it giving up a goal to tie around 75th minute and then gw goal with literally 15 seconds left

Instead of maintaining 1st place with a tie, we drop to second place in conference with us and Duquesne both at 4-1.

Duquesne into the rankings at #24 with their win over us, while we drop to #26 - Maryland up to #6. These polls are crazy reactionary with 6 teams now ranked who werent even receiving votes last week, JMU dropping from top 10 to receiving votes, etc. Hope that means we can jump back into top 10 with win over UMD, which could be huge for potential NCAAT seeding and chances at 1st round bye, hosting, etc.

Top 16 seeds get byes and will host 2nd round game, while seeds 17 through 32 (out of 48) will host first round games.

I had a feeling the team was being rated way too highly. Hopefully they can regroup and close out the season strong and make the tournament.

They are certainly lacking top quality wins and were ranked basically for not losing, but I think the team showed (and learned themselves) that they belong in the field and compete with a team like Maryland.

Maryland's first goal was simply a great play by their player, and the 2nd was a penalty shot.

It was a close and competitive game and Mason had several chances inside the box but ultimately weren't able to convert.

Hopefully they can win out and put themselves back into solid at large positioning.

Maybe, but Dayton just trounced #1 West Virginia 5-1: https://x.com/DaytonFlyers/status/1846361064205676956

The A10 tourney is going to be a rough hill to climb at the top.

We will see how it all shakes out.

Agreed A10 tournament is going to be tough, I meant win out in the regular season. If they win out through the A10 tournament, then they don't have to worry about at large.

Win out regular season, get back into at large positioning, then ideally some quality wins in A10 tournament improve seeding (while avoiding a bad loss to SBU or La Salle, etc.).

Crazy thing is that Dayton wouldn't even make the A10 tournament if it started today - only the top 8 do and they are in 10th (vcu would be out too).
*Edit - I realized that Dayton and vcu had their game postponed earlier in the year, so they have each played one less game than rest of conference. If Dayton had the pts from a potential vcu win right now, they would be tied for 5th.

Not too surprisingly Mason is not receiving votes, but that is also the result of losing two very competitive and close games to current #2 UMD and #23 Duquesne.

Dayton also now ranked #25 due to their blowout win over former #1 (and now #6) WVU.

Mason still in good position to win remaining regular season games, be the 1 or 2 seed in the conference tournament and earn way back inside bubble with some quality wins in conference qtrs/semis (or just win whole damn thing).

This week's poll has UMD at #10, Dayton all the way up to #15, and in the RV category UMass at #26, and Mason at #30.

With a win or tie at vcu (Q2 opponent) this saturday, we will clinch the regular season championship/#1 seed in A10 Tournament. Top 6 teams in conference are all top 50 rpi, but the 8th seed is likely to be a mediocre team.

Setting up nicely for us to have a very winnable 1st round game, then two top 50 opponents in semi's and finals to either build the resume or provide an ok loss.
