"FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason men's soccer team unveiled its 2021 spring schedule on Monday. The Patriots will play 11 games, including six at George Mason Stadium.
The Green and Gold kick off the season on the road at Old Dominion (Feb. 20) in the first of five non-conference matches.
The Patriots then host 2019 College Cup Champion Georgetown (Feb. 23) in the home opener. The Hoyas (21-1-3 in 2019) defeated Virginia 7-6 in penalty kicks on Dec. 15, 2019 at Wakemed Soccer Park in Carey, N.C. to win their first championship in program history.
The Patriots will welcome James Madison (Feb. 27) to wrap up a two-match homestand.
The Patriots have six returners and 19 newcomers on the roster heading into the first season under head coach Elmar Bolowich.
'George Mason will field a brand new squad this spring season,' Bolowich said. 'The challenge is magnified through Covid-19 quarantines, weather and field conditions, to get into a proper practice rhythm with such a young team. However, this very strong schedule will tell us right from the start where we are and what we need to do to be amongst the best.'
George Mason will play six games in March, with three home and three road matches beginning with a matchup at Virginia (March 2). The Cavaliers (21-3-1 in 2019) advanced to the championship game before falling in the 2019 College Cup Championship to Georgetown.
'I deliberately scheduled very good opponents to prepare us for conference play and give the guys enough experience to go confidently into a fall season,' said Bolowich. 'Now our efforts and hopes are that we actually can play these quality opponents. We are looking forward to the challenge.'
The Patriots play their final non-conference match of the season against William and Mary (March 6) at George Mason Stadium.
The six-game Atlantic 10 schedule includes two matches against Davidson, George Washington and vcu. The Patriots host George Washington (March 17), Davidson (March 27) and vcu (April 10).
George Mason will travel to face Davidson (March 13), vcu (March 20) and George Washington (April 3) in conference play.
The top four teams in the conference standings advance to the A-10 Semifinals on April 15. The A-10 Championship match is scheduled for April 17."
